Starting officially tomorrow
« on: August 26, 2006, 22:27:27 pm »
My DS will be 8 wks old this week.  I just finished reading BabyWhisperer and I am going to officially start tomorrow.  I read Babywise in the beginning which is the same routine, however, I just couldn't seem to understand how to get hin to sleep.  BW explains things much better.  I have fought with nap time the whole 8 weeks.  He just wouldn't put himself down.  I admit that I got frustrated very quickly (and still do) b/c I expected it to all just happen.  I didn't realize the work involved and at that point was so sleep deprived and still quite postpartum that I didn't have the patience.  So at 7 1/2 weeks we're still struggling and have developed some bad habits.  I do have a few questions for you all....

1)  I admit that I have been using the paci and it is definitely a prop.  He will go to sleep and sleep until the paci falls out and then he wakes up, so I'm constantly going back in to put it back in his mouth.  How do I get him off of the paci and should I work on that before anything else, or is it okay to start all of this at the same time or is that overwhelming for him.

2) When he awakens midway through a nap due to a dirty diaper do I change the diaper or just let him get himself back to sleep?

Thanks for your help and encouragement.

Welcome to the babywhisperer and wish you all the good luck in the world (not that you'll need it ;)) starting on Easy today  :-*

I sorry, I didn't use a paci so I never experienced the prop issues assossoiated with them - however Esther is also a prop mod (as well as EASY) so I will PM her and get her to drop by here.

If it is a dirty nappy, as in soiled I would change and put back to sleep.

Good luck and let us know how you get on.  ;D

hello there,

if he is waking up as soon as the paci falls down, then it is a prop, so i would recommend you use the gentle removal plan to help him with that: https://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=2361.0

i know its really hard to teach independant sleep, don't get desperate, its really tough but it works. With the pat-shush your LO will learn eventually to go to sleep on his own. I remmember those days where really tough, i had to pat-shush my DS from 45 min to an hr to get him to settle, he was at his worst from 4 weeks old till 9 weeks old, than at 9 weeks old his need for the pat-shush decreased, and suddenly at 12 weeks old he stopped needing it completely, so hang in there, remmember that this shall pass.

and as for the dirty nappy, i agree with Lauren, if it has poop you should change it.

HTH
