Can I just give up?
« on: September 10, 2006, 20:58:18 pm »
We've been doing solids for 2.5 months now, and the only foods he can eat so far are sweet potato, squash, avocado, peaches, and bananas. Everything else we've tried (all cereals, green beans, peas, pears, applesauce) have done nasty things to his digestive system and caused horrible night wakings and severe fussiness during the day.

So I'm ready to just throw in the towel and have these few foods be his diet from here until, oh 12 months. I mean, I just can't handle having him fussy every other week b/c a new food has disagreed. I can't think of any other veggies that wouldn't be gas provoking. I suppose some other fruits might work, but I'm SCARED! I think the only other thing I'm willing to introduce is yogurt. Then i'm DONE!

Anyone else have a sensitive baby like this? What do/did you do?

A bit of meat added to that and he should be fine anyway... I know a baby who only ate bananas as fruit and tatties, carrots and beef for dinner. From 6-12 months. He is fine and very healthy

Becky ***Big Hugs to You*** I have been following your progress and posts so i know how hard it has been for you. If you are happy at this stage to just have Owen eat jsut those foods then that is fine. Have you tried meat, pasta or rice yet? They could be good to give him a little variety. All i can suggest is in a month or so try reintroducing the foods that have upset him to see if he can cope any better with them. We were limited at the beginning with foods due to DD reflux so i understand how you feel. Are the foods just giving him wind? Have you taken him to the doctor just to get this checked out?

Hi Becky,

There is a blood test that can be done to detect for several different food allergies - maybe you can ask your doc about it.  Our ds was tested for everything b/c dh had terrible allergies as an infant.

Hope things start to improve for you :)  (((Hugs))))

Also, some sources say that cereals should not be started until a year anyway ;)

Thanks everyone.

I think i WILL ask my ped about that blood test. This is getting ridiculous! He's 8 months old! Shouldn't he be able to eat appleasauce, for crying out loud? Our pears for that matter?

His symptoms are mostly gassiness, but also constipation and severe fussiness. I suppose the fussiness is b/c his belly hurts from all the gas/constipation.  No rashes or anything like that. Take him off the new food, and jsut a few days later he's his happy self again sleeping thru the night. It's the restless nights that are killing me, not that having a baby fussing morning noon and night isn't aggravating!

We see our ped for the 9 month appt in about 3 weeks. I think I'll bring this all up to her. Maybe we'll try pasta. I think rice is out of the question since he didn't handle rice cereal. And I think I'll call and ask about starting poultry. That might be something he can handle!

Thanks stacy. That actually makes me feel loads better. Owen still loves his formula, and gets about 28-32 oz. per day. So I know he's fine (plus he's a whopping 22+ lbs at 8 months!). My only worry is not being offered enough variety now will make a picky eater later. But you're right - if he has a bad reaction, what's the point? How is he going to enjoy the food if he feels sick on it? And how am I going to enjoy my little boy if he's miserable all day long?

i remeber DD at that age and after the initial weaning where she ate loads of veg her palate became very limited until she was about 11 months. nowadays she prefers variety. like one day she loves baked beans the next -forget it!.
i found that DD loved to have fruit as a finger food so that maybe something to try?

hi becky,
my little christian is the same. he can't tolerate pears and apples and it's a bummer b/c almost all the baby fruits have these in them. he eats bananas, avocado's, plum's, peaches, and nectarines. as for veggies, he was pretty good. i never tried beans or peas b/c i know how he is. i have made the beef and chicken casseroles for AC's book and he can eat those (they contain leek and a stock which is made up of onion). i was surprised that he can take these are the onion content but ???? also i have given a few pre-made dinners and he can cope well with those. i have seen on the ingredients that some have peas in them but i think it is such a small quantity that it doesn't have an effect, maybe you could try some or the casseroles from AC's book. he also has yogurt and eats bread with butter and either blueberry jam or spreadable cheese or liver paste. i hope this helps you, i know what your going through at least.
just try and give the baby jars a shot as you won't actually be serving a whole portion of peas etc, it might just work ans then if you want to make your own food you can copy the ingredients and give it a whirl.

What book are you talking about? I have Super Baby Food. Is there another good baby food book?

Thanks for the advice! Maybe we'll try a little toast. We haven't done finger foods before now. I talked to my ped, and she's fine with us starting poultry, so we'll give that a whirl. I'm introducing yogurt right now. He was pretty gassy last night, but not sure if it's related to the yogurt.

it's annabel karmel's FEEDING YOUR BABY AND TODDLER book. i love it!!!! as for finger foods i give toast, bread, cherrio's (although heard some scary things about them, THEY ARE COATED IN HONEY) baby biscuits. christian used to throw up after yogurt but i was mixing plain yogurt with mango and i think it was just too heavy so now he gets little pots of fruit flavoured yogurt.
for brekkie he eats- a tiny biyt of bread and a few cherrio's
lunch, more bread anda yogurt or banana
dinner fish, chicken or beef meal and then fruit (necterines, peaches, avocado)
i try for a fourth meal of cereal but it always get thrown away untouched :( :(
