So my 10 month old sleeps in bed with me.....
« on: September 20, 2006, 02:48:52 am »
OK- so here is the problem. My DS was NEVER a good sleeper- from day one it was a struggle. Then at about 5-6 months he started sleeping alittle better. But once teething started it all went down hill. He was getting up several times at night for feedings and it was taking a long time to actually get him to go back to sleep in his crib. But then a month ago he got a really bad ear infection  and it seemed like nursing was the only pain reliver there was for him. So in order to allow us both to get some sleep at night I brought him into my bed so I could nurse him to sleep. Now he won't go back to his crib!! He screams and cries- for hours. One night he went for 5 hours straight until I could not take it anymore and just brought him in with me. Even when he naps he falls alseep on me or my DH and if we try to move him into his crib he wakes and cries. We have tried to make him see that his crib is a safe place, we bring him in to it every day and play with him. I just don't know what to do- I am going back to work in 2 months and I need to get this problem resolved!! Any help out there??

Did he used to sleep fine in his crib?  Did you leave him to CIO for those 5 hours in his own bed?  If so you'll need to rebuild trust with your baby.  Tracey recommends to let them sleep on a firm pillow on your lap (which you move to the floor when they're fully asleep) for a week and then with the pillow on the floor for a week, then with the pillow in the crib for about 3-4 days with you staying til he sleeps and going back in the instant he cries.  The forth week you should be able to put him on the mattress but it might take another week.  It's on pg. 192-195 of BWSAYP.  Have you gone through this at all.

i agree with coby (again.  i just agreed with her in another post :))

question time:

like coby said, did he cry alone for those 5 hours?  we may need to start from there if so and make his crib a safe place.  i know you said he plays in there but if he doesn't feel comfortable to sleep in there because he's cried at night then we need to fix that.

do you feel his routine is ok?  A time still ok and all?

have you looked at the pu/pd board for tips on sleep training again?  or on the getting back on track board?

we need to make sure he's not afraid of his crib, his routine is good and then work on sleep training again.  a lot of us have to re-visit sleep training when things happen - vacations, milestones, sickness.  it's totally fixable.
