Possible cows milk protein allergy now refusing feeds
« on: October 03, 2006, 19:36:12 pm »
Ds is nearly 16 weeks old.  Was diagnosed with reflux at 5 weeks.  Until now has always fed well every 3hrs taking 5oz.  Big boy now weight 15lbs 7oz.  once diagnosed with reflux we moved him onto enfamil AR which has improved things slightly but when i spoke to hv she said high chance he has cows milk allergy,  has mucus in poos, congested nose, and sometimes quite colicy as well as reflux.  We tried nutramigen formula for 2 days but saw no change so went back onto enfamil.  Around 4 weeks ago he suddenly started to refuse feeds.  Now def not a teat flow issue.  Have moved to 4 hourly with v.small improvement.  He has gone from taking around 35oz in 24 hrs to taking 22oz.  Today between 7-7 has only taken 14 oz.  17 is now typical.  Best feed is df.

Typical day now looks like this

7am : 2oz
11am 6oz
3pm   3oz
6pm   6oz
df       5/6oz
nw     3oz

Has anyone else had anything like this with other babies that have an allergy.  Or do any of you have any idea why he has cut back soo dramatically.

For first time at clinic this week he hasn't gained weight.

If he has a milk protein allergy/intolerance and is drinking a milk-based formula, not only could that aggravate his reflux but it could upset his tummy and make him not want to eat. You said you tried Nutramigen but did you try Alimentum? The RTF version tastes better and is usually well tolerated, especially if you switch over slowly. Also, is he on meds for his reflux? If not, untreated reflux pain can cause a feeding aversion.

We are now back on nutramigen since sunday night as we didn't give it long enough before. He takes this equally well/badly as his usual formula. He isn't on meds for reflux right now we have a peds appt in november.  so fingers crossed we will be then.

If he's in reflux pain he may not eat well until that's treated - his throat may hurt and he may associate eating with pain - so the sooner you can get that under control the better. Can you move the appointment up?

Sadly not there is a long waiting list but we have lived with this for nearly 4months so 4 more weeks should be ok.  We are seeing a very slight improvement with the nutramigen milk with the vomiting.  Though still not drinking well.  However have just started solids in desperation last couple of days and he loves them.  Last night didn't feed well and very grumpy but as soon as he had solids he was soo happy.  He is obv very hungry.
