Which foods can be frozen?
« on: October 08, 2006, 19:11:58 pm »
Hi everyone, not sure if this is something every good mum should know (!?!) but I was wondering which fruits/vege's can be frozen after puree'ing, or perhaps it would be easier to say which can't.

Thanks
Sal

Hi Sal
According to Annabel Karmel, you can't freeze banana & avocado, but everything else seems to be ok. I thought mashed potato might go a bit weird once frozen, but actually is fine! I have frozen sweet potato, butternut squash, broccoli, green beans, spinach, carrots, parsnips, cauliflower, potato, tomatoes, peppers, apples, pears, apricots, peaches, blueberries, ummm, I am sure there are more but you know it's late on Sunday and I've had a big glass of wine!

I froze just about everything...I also heard if you mix the banana and avacado, it does ok.

I freeze bananas in chunks and feed them to DS in a mesh food feeder.  It's greta for teething, and when you have too many ripe bananas.  But they get watery/mushy fast.

BTW- just something to think about, I made lots and lots of cubes of baby food, and DS decided pretty early on that he'd rather move straight to the real thing...we spent about 1 mo on purees and that's it, so keep that in mind.  Obviously not the case for all los, but I now have a freezer full, and no one to eat it!
Good luck!

I've also froze almost everything except bananas (I like to serve bananas fresh) and avocados (we haven't had them yet).

I found this webpage to be helpful for me in terms of what can't be frozen (there is a list at the bottome of the page).  But IMO, I do believe everything can be frozen.

You can freeze avacado and banana (together or separate).

Thanks a lot, I've got some left over veggies in the fridge from last nights tea so I'll get mushing and freezing. I seem to remember reading that you shouldn't freeze strawberries cos they go really mushy when defrosted but that would be great in this case!
Sal
P.S Kathryn I'm quite impressed you can remember all those foods (and type them) after a big glass of wine

You could add some of the veggies to pasta sauces, casseroles, soups. I used to do this with pureed vegs, just to add more nutrition. Some of the fruits would probably be good in yogurt or mixed into muffin or pancake batter. Just ideas...
