Introducing dinner solids

4 days ago I started my almost 5mo DS on solids at the suggestion of our homeopath and 2 HV's. He has been having pureed butternut pumpkin/squash an hour after his lunch feed. He has taken to it like a duck to water, which is great (not surprising as DH and I LOVE our food!)

I am due to introduce a fruit (probably banana) after a week on the veg after the dinner time feed (as per the 'What Should I Feed My Baby' book by Susannah Oliver - suggested by Homeopath).

As our last breastfeed is around 6.30-7 (we are on 4hr EASY) and DS goes down for the night after his bath, we can't wait an hour afterwards like we do at lunchtime, so my question is - how do I give the fruit? Do I give him as much breast as he will take at that feed and then top him off with fruit?

He has silent reflux (altho it wasn't severe enough for meds) so we have to be sure to keep him up for a while after food.

Is there any fruit which suits babies with reflux - or those that don't?

Any help or advice appreciated

for dinner, I do not worry about timing with bf.  I usually give it at a time that is convenient for the whole family to eat (we've pulled dinner time ahead).  His routine now looke something like:

7-wake & bf
8-breakfast
11-bf
12-lunch
3:30-4 bf
5:45 dinner
6:45/7 bf

It hasn't seemed to impact his last bf of the day, still eats well.  Good luck!

We did dinner in the late afternoon around 4.30/5pm. So you could do it an hour or hour and a half after the afternoon feed.

Just a thought that you may want to introduce any new foods earlier in the day at first so you can monitor and make sure there are no adverse reactions to it.   If there's a reaction, you certainly don't want to find out about it in the middle of the night!  lol

i always introduced a new food first thing in the morning because this gave all day to see if there is a reaction, far better to deal with in the day than at night

at 5 months i think solids is really only to get them used to eating, trying to establish solid feed, getting them used to it for when it is really necessary, milk is far more important, so i would just top up with solids

i am no expert, this is just how i felt and dealt with it, hth

I agree with pps.

Also, how about trying pear instead? I steamed then pureed, and ds loved it as his first taste of anything. I then moved on to sweet potato. I'm not sure about the reflux, sorry, but I do know that it's very easy on the digestive system. I think banana may be a bit heavy, and it's used as an aide when a baby has diarrhoea, so it may cause constipation problems.

because i have replied i thought i should add that i did as stacy did, i only added a second after a really long time on one, and then the thirds after a really long time on two
