Advice appreciated - Feeding schedule for 5 mth old
« on: October 09, 2006, 21:14:59 pm »
Hi Ladies (and guys???)

Ok, Izzi is 5 mths on 19th October. She dropped the dream feed about 4 weeks ago, almost by accident but has been sleeping through from 7pm to 7am quite nicely. She was then only having 4 bottles of 8oz a day which didn't seem enough so I gave her an extra 3 ozs between her 3pm and 7pnm feed.

About 2 weeks ago I noticed that she was getting quite irritable during the day and she wasn't going down at night and it was taking a good while to settle her which is very unusual. I came to the conclusion she was hungry.

I introduced some baby rice instead of the top up milk late afternoon. This worked but it gave her tummy pains I think so I moved the feed to the morning, which helped. Within a week she was showing signs of hunger again so she is now on the following:-

7am 8oz formula

8am 1oz of formula mixed with a teaspoon of baby rice

11.30pm 8oz formula

12.30pm 1oz formula mized with a teaspoon of baby rice

3.30 / 4.00pm 8oz formula

6.30pm 8oz formula

She is quite a long baby and currently weighs just over 8 kilos which is big compared to her peers.

Just looking for some advice about whether everything thinks the above sounds about right?

Oh also... having looked at all the posts on here it seems like everyone's babies sleep for longish periods during the day. Izzi usually manages 30 mins every 4 hours and sometimes 30 mins x 2 every 4 hours. She has never slept much during the day - will this change as she becomes more mobile? She is a contented baby 90% of the time so I have never worried about it.

Thanks,
Karen

This sounds find if you have made the decision to continue with solids at and early age. If you are finding the rice cereal is upsetting the tummy as alot of people find try introducing some fruit or vegetables. The reason for being unsettled could be due to being overtired if she is only having 30min naps every 4hrs. Could you try putting her down after 2hrs of being awake to see if she will take a longer naps?

Hi Natasha,

Have tried putting her down to sleep..... and she sleeps really well... but she just doesn't seem to need any more than 30 mins, maybe 2 lots of 30 mins in any 4 hour cycle.... she has never slept a lot during the day but has always slept really well at night.

The cries definately sounded like hunger cries rather than anything else....... and the baby rice doesn't seem to upsether during the day at all... I think I just started her on it at the wrong time of the day - now it's 8am and 12.30pm she seems tobe doing fine... I was just worried that I might be giving her too much???

Thanks,
Kx

If you are happy with the times and amounts she is sleeping then that is fine. The amounts you are giving is fine at the moment. Good luck ;)
