One bottle at night...how much?
« on: November 05, 2006, 04:51:58 am »
Hi,
I've been breastfeeding since day one and I finally tried a bottle at night, it took three days and on day three he guzzled down four ounces, I made 6 ounces the next day and he almost finished it.
My hubby and I would like to go out to dinner once in a while so I thought it'd be a good idea to try bottles to go to sleep, I'm doing formula cause i can't seem to be able to pump much.
Is anyone trying formula with breastfeeding , if so how much are you giving?
What are your opinions on mixing breastfeeding with one bottle of formula  a day.
By the way my baby boy Reese is just shy of four months.

Hi there

Firstly, congrats on the breastfeeding!

I have also just started giving my DS (6mo next week) a bottle of formula for his dreamfeed as the times we tried it he slept thru, and is now more or less sleeping 10.15 to 6 as a result (along with other things that have helped including him being 'ready'). He was exclusively BF till he started solids at 5mo and whilst I was reluctant to give a bottle of formula at first, it seems to be working well for him (and us!)

At your son's age I think my DS was taking around 7oz of EBM - but I would just fill the bottle up and see how much he takles over a few nights. After all, formula isn't as 'precious' as breastmilk (eg it doesn't take ages to pump it!) so worth doing a little too much than not enough.

Enjoy your time as a couple - we have only just started to and it makes a difference to your relationship, which can only positively affect your ability to be the best Mum you can be ;-)
