Introducing Finger Foods
« on: November 13, 2006, 18:11:42 pm »
Hello.  My lo is 8.5 months old and he has not figured out how to pick up finger foods and feed himself yet.  He does okay if we place larger size items in his hand, he will take bites.  He can also pick up larger size items occasionally.  I am concerned because I know he does not get enough practice picking up finger foods.  We found that if we practice before we feed him, he often does not want whatever the meal is, he only wants the finger foods.  However, if we practice after he eats, then he is not hungry and just plays with the food or ignores it.  He is moving away from the "baby" foods as meals and so I am trying to think of things that would be good practice for him but are also nutritional enough to be a meal.  Usually his practice is with the starts, Gerber fruit/veggie puffs and those are not a meal.   ;D  Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

Kimberly

With Leia,   I did whole grain bread and cut that into pieces for her,   I also did my own mac and cheese,   I used bigger noodles she could pick up easier.   She liked tortillas with a bit of cheese or cream cheese on them and mostly she like her veggies - the canned kind like green beans and carrots or peas.    Canned fruit was good also because it was soft but in bigger chunks (I got the no sugar added canned fruit).     I also found that using lean hamburger and cooking it finely ground and adding it to the pasta's worked well also,  cause it would stick to the noodles with sauce so at least she got protien.   Hope this helps.     Lisa

Melissa- I am sure it has nothing to do with our lo's being close in age so we have the same questions.  Though I don't know what to say about the Britney thread...

You know this discussion would be simplier in the chat room.  We are too silly.
