Thanks to Zoey we have managed to get Daniel out of my arms and into his cot and napping fairly well independently with shh/rub.
He is 5 months and has silent reflux. Now I need to attack the bedtime habit, which was feeding to sleep, but in order to do that we had to rock or swing in a blanket (a technique shown by a nurse to calm colic babies) until drowsy so he would feed.
We have had to feed him drowsy for all feeds for 4 weeks until the medicine kicked in. Now he will feed awake, except for the bedtime feed. If we try to change things around, he protests, so I think he associates going to bed with a swing, feed then bed.
We also want to move him to his own room and into his cot (where he now naps). At the moment he sleeps in the bassinet in our room.
Once we calm him to drowsy, feed him I then put him into the bassinet, he opens his eyes, stretches and pops off to sleep until 5am.
I am too scared to ruin the good night sleep, and wonder whether to keep the ritual he knows and move him to the room, then tackle the habit, so he won't think it is a nap. ie swing him til drowsy, feed him and put him in his cot, instead of the bassinet?
Or break the habit and put him to sleep in the bassinet as he is used to?
Appreciate any advice!
