Two to One Nap Transition: Q's about Tracy's Recs
« on: November 15, 2006, 18:25:36 pm »
I have read Tracy's advice on making the transition from two to one naps in BWSAYP's, but I have a few questions:

1.  When she suggests moving the am nap back gradually, is she assuming there is still a pm nap?  Because if he needs to be up by 330, I don't see that happening.

2.  For an early waker, she suggests using w2s to get them to sleep until 7a before you start moving the nap back.  That makes sense to me, and it has worked well for us in the past, but do I really have to go in and change his diaper?  Couldn't I just touch him/get him to stir a little like before?  I'm afraid changing his diaper will wake him TOO much.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Hi and welcome.

I'll try and answer your questions.

1. Yes, she assumes the pm is still happening if lo needs it. As you push the am forward and forward, the pm becomes a catnap or quiet time. The trick is not to fight that last nap too much if lo won't take it, just offer it or offer quiet time in his crib (For me, the only way to get the catnap was a ride on the stroller or car, no longer than 25 mins). If pm nap doesn't happen, then offer an early bedtime to compensate lost sleep and to avoid overtiredness. DOn't fight the catnap too much or you'll end up with a lo overtired and reluctant to go to bed at night.

2. WTS should be the minimal intervention, and if you think a nappie change will wound him up, then wait if you can until he's up for the day.

If you need extra advice on the switching, then post what a typical day looks like for your lo and we'll try and help you with a plan. Good luck!!!!!

Thanks, Florencia.  That makes sense.  Here goes some quiet time this afternoon . . .

Amelia,
Some of us have also had success with limiting the am nap and moving the pm nap forward.  I don't want to confuse you by offering another option, but just wanted to let you know that on this board you'll find lots of examples of different ways that people have transitioned to one nap.

good luck!

Gotcha.  So far, so good.  W2s (walking into his room and letting the creaky floor make him stir) worked well today; he slept in until 715a.  Nap was 11-1230, so I will offer a nap from 4-430 if he needs it.
