It's true that some babies only need a short A time in the morning. But then those babies often only take a short nap - again, which is fine for the first nap at her age. If she'll sleep after only say 3 hours A time in the morning, that's fine - even if only 40 minutes. Then aim for a long second nap maybe 3.5 hours after end of first nap... Also, the walking can DEFINITELY interfere with things - it did big time here...

Brutal day - due to waiting for a rental car DD had 30 min morning nap in car. This afternoon, after 3.5 A time, she only took a 45 min nap. Then I tried pu/pd & soothing for 40 min which really turned into one long screaming session. Ugh. Now that she's out, she's as happy as can be - until she hits herself and then it's back to screaming - so I know she's still tired. Is the thing to do to try and nap again in about 30 min?

Yesterday was kind of a good day in that she took a two 1-hour naps... Do I just suck it up and go with the flow?

You may have to go with it for now - it sounds like she was overtired from the rental car issue and short first nap in the car- next time that happens maybe try less A time before second nap?
