3 hour EASY
« on: November 25, 2006, 19:22:27 pm »
My lo is almost 5 months old and I can't get her to go beyond 3 hours between feeding (except for once a day when she tends to take a longer nap). Should I really be worried about extending the time? Don't know if this is important info or not, but...she is on the smaller side - only 5lbs. 5 oz. when she was born and now 12 lbs. 8 oz.

I would imagine that her weight has a lot to do with it.  It certainly does closer to birth.  I've heard that bigger babies have bigger stomachs and can therefore hold more food.  I think that is why younger babies can only go so long without food.  To be sure, I 'd ask your pediatrician, but my 12 week old is heavier than that now (and she was only 6lb15oz at birth).  Had she been ill or with any other problems?  What does your Ped. say?

I suppose you're BFing exclusively? if she's really hungry- feed her.
how is she sleeping at night? through or with wakings?

She was only 5 lbs 5 oz at birth and the ped. says she's been gaining weight like a champ. She is only breastfed and very full everytime I feed her. I actually tried pumping extra and feeding it to her after she drains me and she didn't want it.

That sounds fine to me. I think feeding on cue is the way to go anyway. We had night feeds at that age too. I don't think size has anything much to do with it sometimes. Riley was 8lb 1 at birth, at five months he must have been at least 18 lbs, and often fed every three hours, sometimes did have longer stretches. I think it depends on your lo and also how comfortable you feel about the frequent feedings. It didn't bother me in the least!
