Teat or spout? Going back to work & need to transition
« on: December 06, 2006, 05:13:05 am »
hi,

my lo is 4.5mo and i plan to go back to work at the start of february. he has been exclusively breastfed & i want to continue breastfeeding with expressed breastmilk after i return to work so he will need to transition from the breast to bottle in the next couple of months.

my question is, at this age (4.5mo now & 6mo by the time i go back to work) should they be using a bottle with a teat or a spout? he's never taken the bottle well with the teat & i'm wondering if a spout would be better/easier? is it possible to transition from breast directly to spout without the teat first?

anyhow, any suggestions welcome, thanks for reading! :)

I'm sure others will chip in but IMO you'll probably need to try a bit harder with a teat before completely giving up and moving to spout. At his age it's not common to take enough milk from a sippy (although some do). Tell us about his bottle history so far - have you seen this:

If you can't make the bottle work after a bit more of a go then by all mean try spout and play around with the right cup. You might find he takes enough but find a cup which isn't too difficult to swallow from (and usually best for a bf baby not to use one with a soft spout that needs 'biting' to release the valve - not a good skill for a bf baby to practise all day long!).

Good Luck

hi emma,

thanks a lot for the advice & the link! i had a feeling we'd have to give the teats another go :-\ we're onto the 2nd day now of re-introducing them but no joy yet. i might try the tip r.e. spending a whole day just giving him bottles (no breast) and see how that goes.

if all else fails, i'll try the cup with no valve like you suggested - and, no, biting is *definitely* not a skill i want him to master too soon especially as his first 2 teeth appeared just today! :P

thanks again.

Livvy,

I just wanted to chip in and tell you that when I went back to work after DS he was 6 months old. I just went straight to a sippy cup. But I didn't start offering it until around 5 months. We used Avent cups and had the bottles though had rarely used them so he did not drink much from the bottle. For the first couple of weeks I sent sippy spouts and bottle teats to nursery - mainly in case they needed to comfort him to sleep. However, they never needed to use the teats. Fraser had taken (or been offered) a bottle maybe 3-5 times so there was never any major transition from bottle to cup, just breast to cup.

We combined sippy's of my milk at nursery and breastfeeding all the rest of time until he was over a year. I worked pretty long days (commutting  >:() so he generally had a feed first thing, last thing and one night-waking, so even on days when he did not take all his milk at nursery he seemed to do OK. I only worked M-W and exclusively breastfed the rest of the time, so we always had mini-growth spurts on Thursday mornings where we would fit in an extra feed or two.

I hope it all  goes well for you.

Wow lucky you....you had quite a maternity leave! I think 4.5 months might be a bit young for a sippy cup- but you could certainly give it a try.

thanks vicky & jeni! i've been giving the teats another go but it's been uphill work... takes 30 minutes even to get 10mL into him which is just *excruciating*. anyhow, good to know i have some options. i'll keep trying till the end of the month before i give spouts a go. vicky, great to hear you were successful in the breast-to-spout transition, hope we will be too if it comes to that! :)

hi,

just thought i'd give an update on our progress. i'm happy to say that lachlan is finally taking the bottle! he outright rejected the teat so at 5 months i started him on the pidgeon soft spout which is designed for use with the pidgeon magmag cup. it has a cross-cut hole and is recommended for 5mo+. it took a few days (and lots of spilt milk!) but he's finally got the hang of it. he can down 80mL in less than 5 minutes now ;D

anyhow, just wanted to say thanks again to you all for your input!

hi michelle,

double yay! ;D the pidgeon mag mag cup is great. the teat that comes with it was the only one that my lo would drink from (back when he used to take the teat), it's designed to stretch etc like a real nipple. also, in addition to the teat, the mag mag cup can also take a soft spout & a straw. i really can't recommend it enough!
