What should 8 month old nap schedule look like
« on: December 17, 2006, 03:08:26 am »
Hello,
My Daughter Alaina has always taken 30 minute naps, I have tried everything to lengthen them.  However recently she has started taking an occasional longer nap during the day.  I am just wondering what a "typical" day should look like, also how much A time for 8 or 9 month old.  She goes to bed at 7:00 and is up for the day about 6:00.

Thanks,
Katy

Hi

Most 8-9  month olds are on 2 naps per day (some still are having a catnap as well).  Length varies, from probably 1 hr per nap, to 2 hrs per nap. A times vary too, from 2 hrs right through to close to 4 hrs.

My lo is on about 3hr A time, and 2 naps of 1.5 - 2 hrs each when we are at home.  At daycare, longer A times shorter naps. ::)

On days home her routine is

6/6:30 wakeup
9ish 1st nap
1ish 2nd nap
7/7:30 bedtime

But we watch cues more than anything, rather than times.  Today has been

6:30 wakeup
8:30 nap - 1.5 hrs (bad night, and teething really bad, so tired early)
12:30 nap - 1.5 hrs

We ahve a rule in this house that cranky babies go to bed, and she has been whining all her A times, so they are short today for mummy's sake ;)

So I have yet to decide how we will get her to a 7/7:30 bedtime.  I may offer another nap, although she has never taken to catnaps.  Or I may go for complete distraction and take her swimming at the pool (her favourite activity).

My lo is just over 9 months old and he's been consistently taking 2 naps of about an hour each for the past couple months.  He naps each day at 10am and 2pm.  He is in bed by 5:45pm and gets up for the day around 7:45am.

Yah, Cohen is a really good sleeper.  It did take lots of sleep training at the beginning and I've been really consistent with his schedule.  In the mornings, my rule is to not get him out of bed until after 7:15am.  Most mornings are usually around 7:45 and the odd day he'll even sleep until 8:30.  An early bedtime works for us too cause he starts getting cranky around 5:15, so we start his bath/bedtime routine at 5:25.  I know it sounds early, but Cohen just gets tired at that time and wants to go to bed.  I really watch his cues, put him to bed when he's tired and have an early bedtime to ensure he's not overtired.

my LO is 8.5 months, but still takes a catnap. She is really cranky and does not sleep well at night if we skip it.
I was wondering, if it is normal (catnap at almost 9m)?

Most babies have probably dropped it by now.  But having said that it is not all that uncommon not to have.  don't worry - take it while you can!!!

Just wanted to add that my dd1 took her catnap consistently until 9 months so I think its normal.

Cohensmom - I am sooo relieved about what you wrote on your lo going to bed early. Dd2 was/is an early bedder as well. She used to go down as early as 5pm and i'd have to wake her up at 7am on some days. We then went through a phase where her naps went a bit funny and are finally fixing that with more A time. She will still go to bed for the night at 6pm even though her catnap may finish at 4.30-5pm. I swear people think I am a freak for letting her sleep so much and at one stage I got paranoid and thought there was seriously something medically wrong with her. The ped told me there was absolutely nothing wrong with her other than she is on the other spectrum of the sleep scale. She sleeps till 6.30am and would probably sleep more but #1 makes sure EVERYONE is awake the minute she is up (lol). She still wakes at night for a feed thou) but I am very glad she is not the only one!
