Breastfeeding coming to an end
« on: January 11, 2007, 01:25:38 am »
I have exclusively bf my 4 mo dd but am moving her to a bottle.  We are almost all the way there except for her first, last and 1-2 night feeds.  Everything else is expressed breast milk with a little formula.  My questions are 1. is it normal to gain weight as breastfeeding slows and eventually stops (I am getting bigger!!!) and 2. are there hormones that act up during this time (I could just cry right now about anything and everything- completely overreacting)??

The weight gain is normal. You use about 500 extra calories a day BF. I don't know about the hormones, but I wouldn't doubt it!

Yes to both questions!

As Riley started to nurse less often, I found the pounds creeping on. When I was nursing a lot, especially before he started solids, I could eat anything and was hungry most of the time. Then it just got to be a habit that I would eat the same....

I found it very emotional when he started to wean, he was older as well, so it was a mixture of hormones and "My baby is growing up"

Hugs to you xx

Are you going to keep nursing some feeds?

Yes and Yes!

{{{{{{{{{hugs}}}}}}}}}  Has your period returned yet?  If not, be prepared  ;)

Proud to have breastfed for a combined total of 35 months

Ugh, first you lose the weight and then it comes sneaking back??  Not fair.  Binxyboo, I am going to continue with the feeds as long as I have enough for her.  PaigeJalyn, no period yet but I have bought my supplies so I am ready!  But certainly not excited.  Thanks for the responses- time to hit the gym I guess!

I started giving formula during the day and nursing first and last feeds of the day when dd was around 8 months and definitely gained some of the weight back that I had previously lost.  Got my period back after about a month or two of just first/last feeds and then dd weaned and I got pg with #2 (something else to think about if you haven't been careful so far and don't want another just yet). :)
