When to move on for 6month old?
« on: January 19, 2007, 13:12:50 pm »
My lo is 1 week off being 6 months. His current A time is 2hours.

The past couple of days he has started to have 45min naps again (we got past these quite quickly about 1.5months ago). Could this be a sign that it is time to start extending his A time or is it too soon? If so, by how much- just about 15mins to start with?

Also, I find that he still has to have a late afternoon nap (around 4pm), otherwise he would be going 4hours A at this time until bed. But he is always very grizzly after this nap right through until he goes to bed (apart from in his bath- which he loves!)- does anyone know why this is, or is it just because it is the end of the day & he is getting tired for bed?

I appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks
Jodie xx

It definitely sounds like your lo is ready to start increasing her A time.  Yes I would do about 15 minutes every few days and see how your lo copes.  Watch her cues very closely, you want to make sure she does not get overtired, as this can cause very short naps too.

I think it is quite common for lo's to be grizzly around that sort of time.  It is a long day for them, even when they nap well.  My DS is 18 months, and he still gets cranky at around 5:00 ish.

Good luck with extending the A time, let us know how you get on.

I agree with increasing A times.

As for the grizzly part, I found this was the case for my LO till she had long enough A times in the earlier part of the day that she could manage the evening time.  It only took a couple weeks of this and now she is happy as a clam and totally used to it (we used to stick to low key stuff)...

:D Thanks ladies, we have now moved on to a 2.25 awake time & it seems to be helping lots- as I write he has been alseep for 1.5 hours already. He has still been having a couple of 45min naps, but I think we have caught it early before it got into every nap!

When should I start looking to move to 2.5hours A time? Will this not be for a good few weeks yet?

Thanks
Jx

Awesome!!!!

I would only move it to 2.5 hrs if he shows 45 min nap symptoms again and if he shows he wants more A time.  That probably won't be for later on and every LO is slightly different.  But I think you are doing okay for now.

Great job!!

This is sooooooo what is wrong with my DD#2 I just didn't spot it and now things have melted down, she has gone back to about 1.5hours A time and gets grumpy as she isn't napping properly.
Tomorrow I am going to get back on track and start things as I mean to go on. Set the alarm for 7 and work hard and reigning my daughter back.
I dream of hot cups of tea and delicious cake, long chats with friends and luxurious bubble baths!!

Hi,

well we moved to 2.25 A time & he was great for about a week- I was having to wake him up from most of his naps & we got down to 2 naps a day. But now after the second week he has about 1.20min for his first nap & only 45mins for both his 2nd & 3rd naps. I don't think he seems over-tired at all & is sleeping well at night (I hear him wake a couple of times, but settled himself easily- he has never been a great night sleeper!).

Any ideas what may have happened- how can I get these nice long naps back that we were having last week? Should I try extending awake time to 2.5hours or is it too early if he is 6.5months old?

Thanks
Jx

You could try extending your lo's A time a bit more.  I would just watch out to make sure there are no signs of overtiredness.

Do you think that your lo could be going through any developmental milestones?  These can cause havoc on their sleep.

Thanks. I'm not sure really- what may he be going through at this age? He has been rolling for about 2 months. He has just be starting to sit the past couple of weeks. Could this be it?

That could definitely be it.

When they go through developmental milestones, they are learning something new, and want to practice it all the time, and they are constantly thinking about and makes them want to practice it all the time - hence it causing sleep disturbances.

aaah bless them, so funny how such simple things can disturb them, Let's hope it's a passing phase then.

He seems to be able to go claser to 2.5hours A time now, but I will check to make sure he doesn't get over-tired.

Thanks
