Please help us get started
« on: January 23, 2007, 15:20:06 pm »
Hi, my name is Elena and I was hoping to get some help for putting my 3.5 month old daughter on the EASY routine. Our current problems are that she has some breast refusal - she eats very little during the day and then makes up for it by waking up 4 or 5 times to nurse at night. Because she gets so little food during the day, she also doesn't sleep more than 45 mins at a time. I currently have her on a fairly flexible routine 3-3.5 hours between feeds but I was hoping that starting EASY would give her a chance to improve her eating and sleeping habits. (I currently always feed her when she just wakes up since she eats better when she's sleepy).

So, here's my question. I read the Baby Whisperer book and looked around this forum and I'm having a hard time understanding the routine. It says that there should be 3 naps, about 1.5 hrs each. I see, however, that most sample routines have 4 naps, with one short one in the evening? Does this work? Should she actually be getting 4 naps, not 3?

Our current approximate schedule is like this:

up at 5:30 or 6 (we then carry her in a sling until 6:30 or 7 so she'd sleep, but I'd love a way to just have her sleep til this time in the bassinet)

6:30 - 7 -- up for the day
try to feed (she usually refuses)
7 - 9 -- activity
9 - 10 or 10:30 nap

10 or 10:30 -- Eat
Activity
12 - 1:30 - nap

1:30 - Eat
Activity
3:30 - 5:00 nap

5:00 - Eat
Activity
Bed routine, 7 pm bedtime, eat before bed

Please, please help me fix this schedule so I can get her on a 3-hr schedule (rather than 3.5). What can I do? Should I be giving her a catnap in the evening?

Thanks so much for your help and for having such an informational site!
Elena

Hi Elena,

Welcome to the BW Boards.

Your lo should be getting 3 naps and 1 cat nap.  The cat nap is usually around 5:30ish to help your lo get through the late afternoon and make it to bedtime before getting overtired.

When starting with EASY, I would pick a time i.e 7:00am, that you would use to start your day.  It is important to start your day at the same time everyday.  Consistency is the key here.

At the moment your lo has gotted her night time crossed for day time, and is taking most of her calories in the night instead of the day.  You want to try and change this.  It is still quite common for yuor lo to have at least 1 night waking in the night for a feed as welll as having the DF at around 10:00pm.

If she wakes in the night, I would try and re-settle her with out a feed and see if she will go back to sleep.  Does she take a pacci at all?

I would also aim to cluster feed her so she would feed at 5 and then offer her a full feed at 7before bed - this will help her tank up.  At 10:00pm you can offer a dreamfeed.  This feed i done while your lo is still asleep, and will help her tank up even more.
