What kind of oatmeal/cereal for 12 month old?
« on: January 25, 2007, 21:14:43 pm »
Hi! :)

We have been feeding dd organic rice cereal and oatmeal for babies, since she was 6 months old.  Was wondering if we can now move on to regular oatmeal, now that she is a toddler?  Was thinking that perhaps she can move to heavier cereals...what kind of oatmeal do you recommend I feed my 12 month old?

TIA,
Ana

William loves Ready Brek.. which is oatmeal cereal here in the UK.. not sure if you can get it where you are.
Also fine natural porridge oats should be fine at 12 months - just the same as adults eat.
William's favourite cereal is weetabix.. and we get oatibix too which is an oat based cereal which works out like oatmeal when soaked in milk.

I agree with Helen.

I think at this age they can eat any cereals that we eat (providing no allergies).

Thomas's favourite is Weetabix too, and it is a great way to get loads of milk into them and he also loves a bowl of cheeios every now and then too.

I have a 12mo and the only reason I still give her the baby cereal is because it is fortified.  When we travel she eats reg oatmeal and other cereals.

Thank you so much for your response everyone!  Helen and Paula I went on ahead and started her with regular Quaker oatmeal this evening (will try the weetabix once she can handle more of that texture).  She is still getting used to the texture and different flavor but I think she will eventually love it like she does her baby cereal.
momofclaire....thank you as well for your reply.  I was wondering if my 12 mo. lo still needs iron fortified cereal at this stage? I noticed that the regular cereal I got was not iron fortified.

Thanks so much again ladies!!!  :)

Here in Canada I've read that they should be eating iron fortified cereal for the first two years.  What I do is make regular (organic) oatmeal and mix it with her fortified cereal.  That way she gets the iron and some texture.  My DD is only 10 months tho - I wonder if she'll like the bland baby cereal for that long.  However, by that point she should be getting iron from other foods as well.

I am in Canada too, I just like Jenifer said they recommend (if the child will still take it) to give the baby cereal for up to 2 years as it is fortified with the right amount of iron that growing babies/toddlers need. What I have been doing for taste and texture change since about 10 months is I add 1-2 tbsp of yogurt into the cereal with the milk to make it lumpy/soft. This gives her some extra dairy, flavour from the yogurt and she still likes it at almost 16 months. Hope this helps! Sarah

Jenifer and Sarah...thanks for your input..will consider the fortified iron.  For some reason I was under the impression that this was only necessary for the first year.

Thanks again!
Ana :)
