used to sleep at night better before EASY?
« on: January 30, 2007, 19:10:27 pm »
Hi,

We've only been on EASY for 4 days, so perhaps some things will work themselves out on their own?  But would appreciate advice/feedback in the meantime.

Almost 11 week daughter used to sleep from 8pm-ish until 7am-ish through the night with only one night time feeding (she used to wake up for it between 2am and 4:30am).  Goes back to sleep easily until morning.  (During this time was not napping well in the daytime, anywhere from 15 minutes to 45 minutes each, and not very often).  Was cranky and overtired a lot of the time before EASY.

Since EASY, she is sleeping much better in the daytime.  Very pleased!  But is her increased daytime sleep affecting her night time sleep?  The book made it sound as though it wouldn't, or that it would even improve?

Now she goes to bed around 8pm and wakes up around 2am and then again at 5am-6am, seems hungry both times and returns to sleep both times.  But will wake up around 7am and then is "off" her EAS routine.

Could this be a growth spurt?  Or do I need to make sure she isn't napping too well now to preserve her night time sleep?

Thanks for your expertise,

kate's mom

p.s. kate is gaining weight like crazy, so she seems to be getting enough to eat!

I'm hoping someone else will be able to add more advice for you, but it very well could be the 3 month growth spurt if she is hungry both times.  Do you do a DF?  I never had luck with it, but other moms love it.

Hi Katemom,

It takes about 2wks to get a set EASY routine. It has only been 4 days...It will get better, I promise. I remember when my LO was born I did not leave the house for about 1mth so my LO could be on a routine and I could recover from my c-section. Not to mention, I needed sleep  ::)

It sounds like your LO is going through a 3mth growth spurt. Give the routine some time. Remember the routine is not set in stone. You need to be a little flexible with it, especially in the beginning. Just work with EAT, ACTIVITY, SLEEP AND YOU and it will all eventually fall into place.

Good Luck
Dree ;)

hi

I second everything Dree has said. it does take time for EASY to 'kick in'.
if you think her daytime sleep may be affecting her night sleep, how long is she sleeping during the day now?

and it can well be a growth spurt. does she seem a bit more hungry during the day too?

and finally, can you post your routine? or just an average day?

:) Monika

Thanks for the replies and encouragement.  I am definately going to stick with it.

To answer your question, she has slept 3-4 hours in daytime napping on average over the last 4 days (as opposed to maybe the 1-2 she was getting before we started EASY and the shush/pat method to get her to sleep).

No, I haven't tried a dream feed yet - partly because we've been so happy with her night time sleep until now that I was afraid to mess anything up!?

Here is yesterday's schedule, which generally represents what we've been doing so far, although things are still in flux:

7:15 awake (and takes her meds for reflux)
7:35 eat
7:55 activity
9:10 sleep (until 10:10)
10:20 eat
10:40 activity
11:55 sleep (until 1:05)
1:10 eat
1:30 activity
2:55 sleep (until 4:45)
5:25 eat
5:45 activity
no sleep here, but got drowsy finally before next feed
7:25 meds for reflux
7:45 feed (fell asleep during bottle)
8:15 bedtime
2:00 feed (fell asleep afterwards)
5:45 feed (fell asleep afterwards)
7:20 woke up for activity, but did not want to eat until 8:45.

I welcome your feedback!

I would try for a bedtime closer to 7:15 as you want to get to a 7-7 or 8-8 whatever works best for you.  Could you limit that 3 nap to an hour and put her to bed a little earlier. If that worked you could get her in bed around 7 ish and do a dream feed at around 10.  Does that help?

I agree with PP it takes a while to get on a good easy sch and it's not a piece of cake as the name would imply. Worth it for sure though.
