what is "instant breakfast powder?"
« on: February 09, 2007, 05:04:21 am »
we're trying to increase DS' calorie intake, and i've been reading about this "instant breakfast powder." apparently has 130 cals per serving as opposed to 33 cals per serving of dried skim milk powder. does anyone know what it is?

thanks!

katy   :)

Me again!

Is that the Carnation Instant Breakfast powder you are talking about? I know they have a toddler one now, they have a website, let me find it for you....http://www.carnationinstantbreakfast.com/Products/

I don't know enough about it to recommend it per se, but you should find what you need to know on there.

Katy - the little boy I nanny for whose mama is a pediatrician gave her LO that when he needed to gain weight.  The above poster gave the correct brand.  It helped with the whole milk and the calories.  The little boy called them "baba shakes".  She recommends them to moms whose babes need to gain weight. :D

I might actually suggest using these at night instead of in the morning as it might be quite filling and you don't want him to be too full and eat less meals. Could be his bedtime snack instead of plain milk?

Katy - You might also try some Pediasure.  It's chock full of calories and vitamins and specific to infant/toddler nutrition.  Probably not as many cals as Carnation Instant Breakfast though.  I have a couple of bottles and can mail them down to you as Katie didn't like them.  Maybe I should try a "baby shake" right at bedtime to tide her over longer...

Bit of trivia: Pediasure is 1 calorie/ ml.  So an 8 oz can/bottle is about 250 calories.  Amazing the weird stuff that sticks in the brain.  I have not fed Pediasure in years!!!     ::)

yeah, that's what i'm worried about. so maybe after naptime, or during his bath before bed. just to try to fill in the gaps left over from his meals  ;D

Katy - we give eloise her milk right when she wakes from her nap and then a lite snack about 1 hour later.  I find that she's ready for the snack because it's been about 4-5 hours since she's eaten.  It seems like this might help for theron.  Bedtime might work too, I would just worry about the sugar before bed and if it would affect him....who knows ???

we'll, he's had three of these shakes now. i've never seen him chug a cup of milk, but he did today. then kept looking for more, even making the more sign to himself when he didn't realize i was watching!

the good news is that his weight has gone from 21lb 8oz to 23lb 2oz in a month, and the ped's now happy with his weight %. he's eating a lot more now that three of his four eye teeth are through; i don't think i'll be giving him many more of these shakes. maybe a little chocolate milk instead for a treat occasionally.

thanks for all your advice!

katy

Katy - Just curious, why was your ped so concerned?  Has he lost weight?  I know the wieght charts are different for boys, but dd didn't hit 20lb until 20mos, and at 2yr only weighed 22lb.  She's only 5%, but the ped said the weight was normal for her frame.

hiya deb. the ped was concerned because he'd slipped from the 50% at 2 months to 5% at 16 months. he was an extremely well ebf fed baby at 2 months (before i discovered BW, and some sanity!) and i suspect that his current build is more reflective of where he naturally is. it certainly matches what his dad and i were at his age. so it wasn't the weight as such, but the stretching out that he's done over the past year. hth!

Ok, makes sense.  We've had some weight gain concerns as well, but it was only when she stopped gaining entirely or lost weight over a period of months.
