Moving to one nap at 11 and a half months
« on: February 25, 2007, 08:04:18 am »
Hi all,

Over the past week, DD decided to drop her morning nap. She's put to bed as usual (when she shows tiredness cues and we even tried a little later to extend A time). But then she would talk to her stuffed animal for a long time (once it was even 30 minutes), and then she'd start crying. When we enter she's happy to see us and no signs of willingness to go to sleep.

Is she too young for one nap?

I would like to have suggestions about modifying her routine accordingly. It used to be:
Wake: ~7:00
E: 7:30 bottle, 8:30 breakfast
S: 10:30 (45-60 minutes)
E: 12:30 lunch, 13:30 bottle
S: 14:30 (90 minutes)
E: 17:00 dinner, 7:00 bottle
Night: 7:30

I'm trying to decide how to change her meals with the new routine (that is where to fit the second bottle. Her routine in the past week was:
Wake: 7:30 (no complaints here)
E: 7:30 bottle, 8:30 breakfast
E: 12:30 lunch, 13:00 bottle
S: right after bottle
E: 17:00 dinner, 7:00 bottle
Night: 7:30

Thanks very much,
Tuty

We moved to 1 nap at 11.5months. We only giving 2 bottles by then so our day was:

7am - Wake,Bottle,Breakfast
11.30am - Lunch
12pm - Nap 2-3hrs
5.30pm - Dinner,Bottle
7pm - Bed
If your LO can handle the longer awake time without getting overtired then give it go. However i think 1pm nap might be to late to begin with you may want to start with 12.30pm.

I think she really needs 2 naps, in the past week she's been more fussy and tonight we had troubles at bed time, she also woke up 2 nights ago and couldn't fall back to sleep (now we're back to pat/shush - which we stopped months ago). Any way we can force the morning nap??

i think for the time i would keep trying with the two naps and see how it goes for a week or two, after this time i would ask the question again, i don't think you can ever force sleep

Can you go for a drive/walk to giver her a short nap to get her through to her long PM nap?

I'm a working mom, but I can ask the nanny to take her for a walk around her usual AM nap, though she usually doesn't fall asleep easily outside her crib.

About forcing to sleep, it was a retorical question.. I've learned it the hard way that when she decides she doesn't want to nap, she just won't. So for now we keep aiming for the AM nap, but I also know when it's time to give up..

Thanks!
