6 weeks old and 30 minute naps!
« on: March 08, 2007, 03:56:12 am »
Hi,
I'm sure you've had this question before but my baby boy Zac sleeps for 30 mins and wakes up crying. The first time he did that, I thought he was hungry so I fed him. But he'd suck for a good 40 secons to a minute and then looked like he was going back to sleep. I have only recently started the shh/pat technique with him so instead of letting him fall asleep on the breast, I quickly put him back in his cot and shh-ed him to sleep and he'd sleep for another 30 minutes.

The next time he fed, he'd sleep for another 30 minutes, and then start crying. So, this time, I didn't feed him nor pick him up. I just tried shh-ing and patting him for a good 30 minutes, but he wouldn't settle, so I resorted to the dummy which settled him and then I shhh-ed him back to sleep...

Can someone please tell me how to break the 30 minute habit? and is it okay that he only sleeps for an hour before each feed?

HELP!!

Hey there!  I can sympathise!  My DS is just over 3 weeks and he wakes after almost 40 minutes each nap!  Each time I hear him wake, I set the timer for 5 minutes and let him cry.  Sometimes he works it out in a couple of minutes and falls right back to sleep.  If he doesn't stop after 5 minutes I go in and pick him up and do shh/pat.  He settles pretty quickly and when he's pretty drowsy (a little beyond calm!) I put him back in his crib and shh for about 7-8 minutes and pat for 20.  He does go back to sleep and will usually sleep for another 40 minutes to an hour.  It's a little tedious, but I'm hoping he'll eventually get himself through the 40 minute marker.  I'm sure many people would say not to let him cry, but if I go in too soon I'm afraid I won't give him the chance to work it through himself.... hope that helps!  Good luck!
