what cheese to give 8mo?
« on: March 19, 2007, 06:28:31 am »
hi,

my ds has been on solids since he was 5.5mo & is doing okay with it at 8mo. he still eats pureed & semi-pureed foods (veg/fruit/meat), sometimes mashed. he also eats rusks & toast & very ripe fruit as finger food.

he's been doing fine with yoghurt so thought i would introduce cheese but not sure what kinds are okay... are hard cheeses like a mild cheddar okay? or soft cheeses? how about cream cheese like the philadelphia spread on toast? also, if hard cheeses, how small should the pieces be? or should i be giving cheese slices instead?

thanks in advance!

You could definitely do something like philadelphia on toast or mixed into tomato sauce for a new pasta sauce. I started with mild cheddar or edam and grated is quite good as they can pick up small fingerfulls. As for size of pieces, I guess it depends on how confident he is with finger food. It dissolves in the mouth quite easily though so I'm sure he'll be fine. You could also melt some cheese and make a fondue (minus the alcohol!) and give him veggies to dip into it - but it does retain it's heat so be careful.
I say at his age most cheese would be fine as long as they are pasteurised (if you're in the US I'm not sure unpasteurised are easily available anyway) - and not blue cheese just yet.

Emma - what a good idea thank you!  A fondue, how clever.  I never would have thought of that!

My LO just turned 9 months and we give him any type of mild chees (american, mozza, cheddar, etc...). He likes the slices as well as pieces cut from a block of cheese. He only has 2 teeth but uses his gums to "chew" it, and does fine! One of his favorite snacks.

my lo's had lots of kinds of cheese. really the only kind i've not given him is cottage, as there's a lot of sodium in there. i guess the number just scared me off. and i've not been able to find a low-sodium one.

My LO just LOVES it when I put cream cheese in bread and give it as mini sandwiches. It's her fave finger food!

Also to make the food tastier I add the grated cheese in her food when it's still warm so it melts and gives a really nice flavour.

My dd is nearly 12 months old but I've been giving her cheese sauce since she was about 8 or 9 months and she absolutely loves it, in fact, if I can't get her to eat her dinner, I add it to her food and she gobbles it all down.  It's really easy - I use Annabel Karmel's basic cheese sauce recipe:

15g (0.5oz) unsalted butter
15g (0.5oz) plain flour
200ml (7 floz) full fat milk
40g (1.5oz) cheddar cheese, grated

Melt the butter in a saucepan, stir in the flour to make a smooth paste and cook for 1 min.  Gradually stir in the milk, bring to the boil and cook for a few mins over a low heat until thickened and smooth.  Stir in the grated cheese until melted.

I usually double the amounts in this recipe and freeze it in 2 tbsp portions.

Good luck!
