question for a friend
« on: March 20, 2007, 23:28:12 pm »
My neighbor has an almost 2 yr old son.  recently (lliek the past week or so) he has been waking every night screaming for his mom.  She thinks it may be nightmares as he has never done that before.  does anyone know anyt hing about this or does anyone have advice for her???  she usually will go in and calm him then leave.  sometimes it works other times he cries for her until she sits with him the whole night or takes him into bed with her.

Has he watched anytning recently or been scared in any way??? Dh just the other day told Isabella to stay away from the garage because there are spiders in there.... next thing I know when I was bathing her that evening (and we saw a little spider crawling), she said "spider....scared" ???. I could have killed dh. I try not to use those words or have her frightened in any way. Anyway off the topic here but maybe ask her....

Could also be related to his daytime sleep and routine in general. Does he still nap and what times? What does his whole day look like???

Sitting with him or taking into bed is a good enough reason for toddlers to be waking at night as well. If she had done it oncem he might just be expecting it again and again.

Here's a link to sleep training for toddlers - tell your friend to chose an option and try and stick to it.

Good luck and let me know how it goes

She doesn't use BW.  She doesn't usually stay with him but sometimes he just wont let her go without screaming more.  last night she went in and told him he was ok and to go back to sleep and then left and he went back to sleep and woke again and she did the same thing and he did it again.  but sometimes if he is really upset he wont go back to sleep.  she is 7 mo. preg. and needs to sleep.  and she feels like it's ok to take him in to bed with her sometimes.  I am just curious if nayone knows anything about what causes nightmares or how to prevent them.  like do you talk with them about it when they are awake?  I'll have to ask her if she has noticed naything that scares him and I will let you know.

What time is he waking?

Night terrors happen in the first part of the nights sleep. Waking a couple of hours after falling asleep.
Nightmares tend to happen later on in the night.
