leaving the bowl be!
« on: March 21, 2007, 12:28:08 pm »
hi folks!
about 2 months ago my lo decided he didn't want to be spoonfed anymore. so, except for his breakfast cereal, he gets fingerfood. it takes some creativity but we've managed really well. we just put the food on his highchair tray and he goes to town. whenever i give him food in a bowl (or he gets his hands on the bowl i'm feeding from) he just picks up the bowl and throws it. i know it's a stage, but how long does it last? what can i do to teach him to leave it be and to take the food out of it? it would be nice, kinda like one step to eating in a civilized manner.  ;)
i see other babies do it. i don't even need him to use a spoon, just want him to start fingerfeeding out of a bowl. am i expecting too much at this age?

Have you tried bowls that can be suctioned down to the tray of the highchair?  These bowls are not full proof, but they do slow down our LOs.  My LO of 12mths is so determined he always gets his bowl off the tray.  But he usually has already eaten half of his food before accomplishing this.  So at least I have half the mess to clean up instead of a whole bowl full!

my LO gets her suctioned bowl off in seconds! I think she's gonna be a really strong li'l girl....

I've given up, I just give her the bowl to play with and know(hope) that one day she'll stop doing it!

I guess it is a stage :) Mine would throw bowl in a second, He refused spoon at one pint but will take it now, but I cannot still leave bowl on ray without holding it. mind you he broke one plate ::) Which was supposed to be unbrakeable.
Anyway I am sure none of our babies will not eat with fingers forever :) :) one day....

that's so true. i guess he won't be 5 and still eat with his fingers off a tray. i'll try a suctioned bowl, maybe it'll at least get the message across before he figures out that he can indeed get that one off his tray too.
thanks.

if anything it may keep him busy while you get a few spoonfuls of food in!

I never even bothered to give Ewan a bowl until he was at least 18 months.  I did try a couple of times but like you say he just threw it so I figured he could eat off of the tray for a while ;).  I still dont give Bram a bowl either he eats off the tray ;D

ha ha arent spirited babies great !! ;D ;D ;D my son thinks tug of war is the standard way to start a meal, and then we move on to plate tossing and food throwing. i know that they are supposed to be learning to feed themselves but the only way i get through a meal alive is if i keep the bowl off the high chair and firmly in mommys hands away from his!!
