I am confused!!
« on: March 21, 2007, 13:01:16 pm »
Hi,
I have stared to give solides to my DS when he was 6 months old. (today he is 7 1/2 m).
reading some routeens here.. I am confused. I am still BF, but only in the morning when he wakes up and at about 0400 PM (and at night when he wakes for food).
BUT I see that other moms that also BF- they give the solids right after the BF..?? I thought the BF is considered as a meal. this is his schedule:
0700-0730 wake up and BF
0900- sleep (50 minuts.. some times 2 hours...)
1100 fruit
1-2 (depends on how much he slept before): sleep
230-300pm- chicken and veg (meshed).
0400 +- BF
0600pm- bath
0630 Bottle and sleep.

So can some one please tell me how it should work??
thanks,
Annap

hi

how much fruit do you feed him at 11am?
regarding your routine- I think it's ok BUT I also think you could add one more BF session or more solids to his diet to eventually eliminate that 4am feeding.

so I think you could do
7/7:30am BF
8:30 solids [jogurt etc.]
11 solids
2:30/3 solids
4 BF
6:30 bottle

what do you think?

I think you'd still need a milk feed around the middle of the day at only 7.5months. So you'd have a minimum of 4 milk feeds.

At his age milk is still his primary source of nutrition and you'd want to reflect that in the day. Bf mothers often give solids after a bf at his age to ensure that milk is taking first priority. Many also wait for up to an hour after a milk feed and then give solids.
If solids come first then the baby will obviously demand less from the breast and this can mean a reduction in milk supply or not getting enough milk in the day. Bfing takes a bit of effort for baby and if solids come too soon before a bf then baby won't be motivated to feed effectively. At around 8-9 months some bf mums begin to offer solids first but keeping a careful eye on the breastfeeds. However some continue to offer bf 'first' or before in the schedule up to 12 months.
So a schedule might look like this:
7.30bf
8am solids
11bf
12 solids
4pm bf
5pm solids
bedtime bf

If you look at the EASY boards there are versions of this for many bf babies.

Thank you both!
I am actaully trying to reduce BF so he will get used to the idea later on and not stop BT at once. when I see he did not eat enough of the fruit or lunch - I give him a bottle to complete. (I do not BF because I want my breasts to "get used" to the idea that they should supply less milk...).
about yr Q- fruit; depends on DS: it can be a hole banana with some OJ or just half.. it can be half an apple with half a pear meshed together.. it can half an avocado with halh banana (sounds awful- tast it- it is great!!). so it is not yet something regular.. same thing goes for lunch- he can eat it all or just a few bites...

SO- what I gather from your answers- I should give solids after BF in the morning and add one more solid meal?
Thank you,
Anna

Hi Anna

My DS is 10mo, but we are on a similar EASY to at 7.5mo (only food types and amounts have changed). I am still BF for all meals, but this should work regardless of BF or bottle

Here it is:
Wake: 6.30
BF: 6.45
Breakfast/mashed fruit:8am
Sleep: 9am
Wake: 10.30/11
BF: 11
Solids: 12.30
Sleep: 1.45/2.15
Wake: 3/3.15
BF: 3.15
Solids: 4.15/30
BF: 6.45pm
Sleep: 7.15

Hope that helps

Shell
