runny pooh pooh from Alimentum
« on: March 25, 2007, 14:57:26 pm »
I have a son who started getting runny loose stools from the alimentum switch. I dont know if it will end or is it probably not and i need to switch him again. He is allergic to milk and soy so his doc told me to go to this.  It is working as for the excema and the tummy aches but now he has loose stools everyday. It has only been like 2 weeks and i was hoping he would get used to it and it would end but i'm beginning to think maybe he is not tolerating it as well as he looks to be.  He likes it and has no spitting up or any other symptoms at all!!  Just the frequent runny poops.. I have heard of babys who wont drink it at all. Now mine does but maybe his little tummy is just fighting back by getting it out of him as soon as he gets some in him. Maybe his tummy is getting upset from it and he just doesn't get belly aches anymore cause he is just getting it out as fast as he can. I am wondering if it will go away eventually, or i have to switch to Nutrimigen, or neocate or something a little easier on his tummy.  Please let me know if anyone else has this problem!!

Hi!  My son was on both Alimentum and Nutramigen (really close to the same, BTW).  I am afraid runny poops are just part of the hypo formula package for most kids.   :P  My son's pediatric GI told us to expect yucky, stinky, runny dark poops while on any hypo formula.  And this is definitely what we got - his diapers looked like something from a swamp.  (sorry, probably TMI).  But that is very normal.  Hypoallergenic formulas are broken down and get digested very quickly, making the end-product different as well.  Maybe mention it to the doctor, but as long as he seems to be content on the formula, it is probably doing its job.  HTH!   :)

Totally agree with Sheila. Frequent runny poos are common on Alimentum since it's so easy to digest. As long as he seems fine otherwise I wouldn't worry about it!

Yup, swamp poo is part of it.   :P, but beats the alternative of a sick babe.

same here.  alimentum was a blessing for my LO's tummy.  we had the hardest time the first few weeks after nursing.  she stayed on alimentum until just a few weeks ago.
