trouble with my lo going to sleep
« on: April 02, 2007, 04:10:51 am »
I am having trouble getting my little one to sleep without being held or nursed. She is 17 days old and I'm trying to get her on the right track. I put her down before she goes to sleep and she cries. She cries so hard that she will eventually wake herself and be fully awake.  Does anyone have any suggestions on how to handle this? Am I doing the right thing or am I way off here. I'm a first time mom and any thoughts would be helpful. Thanks!

Hi and welcome. I'm only relatively new myself, but I'll give it a go.
After feeding your LO does she fall asleep? If so have you tried a little activity like a nappy change etc, to wake her up. Then keep her up for a bit if possible, then you could watch for tired signs before putting her down to sleep. Newborns aren't able to handle much Activity time, sometimes only a nappy change.
Do you swaddle? I know swaddling can help them stay asleep once asleep. I had a similar problem to you. I was basically forcing by DS to go to sleep and he wasn't even tired. So he cried and screamed and I couldn't understand why. I always assumed that babies went straight to sleep after feeding. That was until I read The Baby Whisperer.
HTH, Good Luck :)

I just started her EASY routine and she advises keeping baby up for 45 after a feeding then starting to get her/him ready for the nap. Buy her recent book..it's great.  Your lo is still very young so she'll need some soothing to fall asleep, but try not to get her in the habit of needing your breast to fall asleep.

She usually will not sleep without being held. Any suggestions? I'm also no using a dummy but considering it because she tries to use my breast to suckle just for soothing, I'm just afraid of creating more bad habits...

Have you tried sh/pat? I'm not really sure what else to suggest. I would suggest using a dummy. It does help for soothing as you say and it's mentioned in BWSAYP, that it is a good idea to allow your baby to have some sucking time in between feeds, so they don't just use you all the time. It's up to you, because it may cause you problems down the track. Sorry I hope a professional comes along to give you some more help. :)

I definitely think that I'm going to have to try a dummy. I have tried sh/pat, but I'm not sure that I did it the right way because it just seemed to make her cry harder. I never heard the 3 crescendos, maybe I didn't wait long enough but I couldn't stand to see my 3 week old precious daughter shaking and screaming. Either way I feel like a bad mom.

Hi,

My second daughter is 12 days old.  I have put her on a "relaxed" EASY routine for now.  I am trying to get her get to fall asleep and stay asleep in her crib, but every nap seems to be different.  So far I have found that she sleeps really well if I put her in a bouncy seat or swing (not turned on).  I always try to put her in the crib, but if she's really have difficulty this always works (for right now).  I will keep trying to teach her independent sleep but I think they are just too young right now to force it on them. Hopefully this won't backfire and turn into accidental parenting, but I am trying to be a little more easy going this time around than with my first.  I think the most important things at this age are not feeding to sleep and making sure they are getting enough sleep, however it happens, until they are a little older and can really learn how to self soothe.

Good luck to us all!
Melinda
