I must be very slow but...
- how do I show appreciation?
- how do you use smilies?
- how can I delete my email address from my profile (which I would like to do)?

- how do I show appreciation?

You show appreciation by clicking the "Thank You" that appears in each persons profile on the left-hand side of any post.

- how do you use smilies?

When making a post you should see the smilies themselves above the text-entry box, just click on whichever smiley you would like.  Alternatively you can use your keyboard, for eg.

:) gives you   By clicking each smiley you will see what code it uses

- how can I delete my email address from my profile (which I would like to do)?

Go into your Profile by selecting "Profile" from near the top of the page.  Then from the left-side menu select "Account Related Settings" there you will see "Hide email address from public?" click in the check-box next to that, scroll to the bottom of the page, enter you password where required and select "Change profile"
