15 week old waking every three hours again...
« on: April 27, 2007, 15:13:12 pm »
My daughter has been waking every three hours again at night and I am so sleep deprived.  She had a couple of days in the past where she gave me a 4 or 5 hour stretch.  I have a feeling that she preers to eat at night - during the day she is very distracted.  I have treid to implement a routine but it varies greatly every day.  She has been doing the 3 hour easy routine - her awake time is about an hour 20 minutes and she settles for naps and night time easily ( she found her thumb).  I'm nursing exclusevely.
Awake and eat 7.00 am (but won't take much)
Activity
Sleep 8.00 am

Awake 8.45 am
Activity
Sleep 10 am

Awake and eat( sometimes after 45 minutes -sometimes after 1.5 or 2 hours)
Activity 1 hour 20 minutes
Sleep 45 minutes
the rest of the day continues like that with 45 minutes naps and clusterfeeds until I put her to bed at 7.00 - 7.30 pm
we have a great routine and she goes to sleep within 10 minutes by herself.  But then she wakes before I can even give her a dreamfeed 3 hours later and then every 3 hours after that.

My questions is:  How can I get her to eat more during the day and less at night?

If you think she is distraced during meal times, try to find a place that is quite and less stimulating to nurse.  I would turn the tv, and radio off, try to create less visual stimuli and noise.  Do you try to settle her at night without feeding?  When Claire was that young I would try to soothe her to sleep anytime she woke unless it had been at least three hours since her last feed.  If you feed everytime she wakes overnight she will not need those calories during the day and thus starts a vicious cycle.

Yes, exactly what Myia said. Plus those 45 minute naps won't do you any favors either. Have you tried extending them?

Thank you.  I have tried extending her naps unsuccessfully.  I tried both methods - replugging her with the paci and slightly stirring her at the 35 minute mark - both didn't work - I tried for a couple of days.  Also sush/pat doesn't work  - she starts screaming even harder.  In the past I would replug the paci at night-  I tried to soothe her that way back to sleep and it worked some time ( then I was nervous about creating a prop ???) She sel weaned from the paci and gets mad when I try to give it to her.  She doesn't want it aymore and prefers her thumb.
Do you have any suggestions how to soothe her back to sleep without offering the boob?  I tried pick up/ put down - she was beside herself...
please - any suggestions?  I fell like I'm doing something wrong and failing miserably at this...

She's not quite old enough yet for PU/PD - that's intended for babies 4 mo or older. How long did you give shhh/pat when you tried? Things take some time and require consistency.

You are not failing miserably. I promise.

Be consistant with pat/shh.  It may take time but think of it as teaching her to sleep and be patient.  Hang in there.
