Dropping a cluster feed
« on: May 02, 2007, 17:40:04 pm »
Hi,

Sorry if this question has already been asked, I have searched for an answer but cannot find anything.

Our baby is approaching 8 weeks, is bottle fed (currently 150ml) and we have been on the EASY schedule for 3 weeks.  In the book it advises to drop the 2nd cluster feed at 8 weeks.  Our questions are:

1. Because he's only been on EASY for 3 weeks, should we be dropping the cluster feed so soon, or is this based on his age

2. If we are to drop the feed, should we be compensating feed through the day to make up for the lost one?

Many thanks - AJ, Elaine and Oscar x

Hi!

I had the same questions when my DD was the same age. What I ended up doing was just going by her cues. She still wanted the cluster so I didn't drop it. At 5 months we are now on a 4 hour EASY and she still has two feeds in the evening close together!!! Is your LO BF?

If you drop it, I don't think you make up for it during the day. I would suggest you just experiment with dropping it & see how it goes. Your LO will let you know what he needs!

You can add an ounce to each of the other bottles during the day to compensate for the one cluster feed you are dropping. If you drop it, and your LO is ravenously hungry by bed time, you might need to keep it. Other wise you should be ok.

Thanks for your replies, he is BF.  I guess it's a case of trying to drop it and see how he goes.  Last night he slept through until 5am.  Amazing, but we won't expect that tonight, we've soon learnt that he likes to keep us guessing!

Yes, they like to keep us on our toes, don't they!  ;)

Its natural for BF babies to cluster in the evening anyway bc. as the milk supply is lower in the evening the feeds aren't quite as large so they naturally want to eat again sooner. Like I said, we STILL have 2 feeds very close together in the evening. DD eats at 7am, 11am, 3pm, 6pm and 7/7:30!! I feel like in the evening all we do is EAT!  ::)
