Early wake 19 month old
« on: May 08, 2007, 13:53:00 pm »
Hi again!  I finally got my son to sleep all night. I am just having problems with his waking hour.  He is having two naps in the day (one morning, one afternoon about 40min) or just one 1 hour at midday.  He falls asleep at 8:30 with an 8onz bottle, but wakes up hungry at 5am.  If i'm lucky he falls asleep another hour and a half, if i'm not it's very tiring.  I just want to know what I should do, for him to not need that bottle at that time.  Should I put him to sleep later?

Thanks for the help.

Have you considered having him take one nap after lunch? If he has only one nap during the day it may help his nighttime sleep to be a bit longer. What is he eating during the day? At 19 months he shouldn't wake so hungry at 5am.

MS - your lo should be on 1 nap so I would do my absolute best to ignore those tired signs and to keep him awake until 12pm. He should go down for a longer nap (1.5-2hrs) and then you do bedtime about 5-5.5hrs later.

I think he is using the bottle as a prop to get back to sleep. At 19months he should be able to go all night (11hr stretch) without a feed. What time does he start the day??? 8.30pm also sounds like a late bedtime. If he wakes at 7am, his day should look something like this:

7am - wake for the day
12.30 (the latest) - nap
2.30pm - wake from nap
7.30 (in bed) - bedtime

Try to take him out of the house in the morning, provide lots of stimulation.... get him to run around at the park, etc... and as you come closer to midday, have lunch (say 11ish to allow for bowel movements) and then do a long wind down routine to get him nice and sleepy..... in about a week his body clock should adjust accordingly.

If he continues to wake in the morning for that bottle, I would try wi/wo to get him back to sleep until the desired wake up time. If he's up early and is just chatting to himself then leave him until the desired wake up time. Early morning wake ups are also from incorrect schedule and too late of bedtime.

Thanks! What do I do if he falls asleep in the car?  He does that every day, and that's where he gets his naps.  Without a bottle!

Avoid car rides for a week/two if possible. How long is the car ride and what time is it. I think if you can dedicate a few weeks to changing his nap time then you might find he won't be snoozing in the car in the morning cause he is better rested.

Do your best to keep him awake if car rides are unavoidable. Sing songs, clap hands....etc....
