starting to wake up at 05h30 - HELP
« on: May 12, 2007, 15:49:34 pm »
Hi there,

Not to sure if this is the correct place to ask this, as I don't know if my 2 year and 8 month old is considered a 'pre-schooler'.

But I seriously don't know what could be causing  him to wake up at 05h30 in the morning when he used to wake up at 07h00 before. He is still in the same routine - only having 1 and half hours to 2 hours sleep during the day. And goes to bed between 19h30 and 20h00.

He is presently in the middle of toilet training and has started to wake us up during the night to go to the toilet. But in the morning he doesn't ask to go he just wants to start the day.

Anyone with any answers or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Kate

HI!

My 15 mo. old DS, is doing the exact same thing. Except he wakes up anywhere from 5am-5:45am usually its 5!!! I tried the wake to sleep one morning at 3:30am. He went right back to sleep and then woke back up at 4:30am, I gave him a bottle and he went back to sleep till 7. The next day I did nothing and he woke up at 5am. Then the following night I did wake to sleep at 4 and he never went back to sleep. So last night I did nothing again ( because I slept through my alarm) and he woke up at 5:30am! I have no idea what to do. It's been two weeks of this and yea I started potty training too, about three weeks ago. I wonder if that has anything to do with it?

Any suggestions?

His schedule: (when he doesn't wake up at 5)
7- wake up, bottle
8-breakfast
10-snack
11:45 or 12- lunch
12:15 or 12:30- nap usually 2 hours
3-snack
5:30 or 6- dinner
6- bath, story, bedtime by 7. bottle

When he's been waking so early-
I usually give him a morning nap 8am. I let him sleep as long as he can b/t 1.5-2 hours
And then try to get him to nap @1 or 2 in the afternoon.
Bed time is usually a little earlier, if he's tired maybe 6:30 or 6:45pm. But I try to make it 7pm.

Hope that's not to confusing! Any help would be great!!
About wake to sleep- how many mornings am I suppose to wake him?

thanks!!
7- bed

Hi there,

I think you might need to re-arrange the length/timing of the naps. You mentioned that when he wakes early, you let him have a morning nap for as long as he wants and then a pm nap. A long morning nap can re-enforce early wakings so I would actually let him have a short nap in the morning (maybe 30mins - no more) at around 9am and then a longer, more refreshing nap in the afternoon , say about 12.30-1pm. He is probably heading towards the 1 nap anyways so he doesn't need to sleep so long during the day. So I would consistently offer the morning nap at 9am (on the days he is waking early) and a pm nap. 8am is too early and it stuffs the whole day up. Sure he is getting 2 naps in but the timing of the naps also matter and if he is not getting the rest he needs during the day at the "right" time then that leads to early wakeups and possibly even nightwakings.

The average sleep in total is about 13hrs, 11hrs at night and 2hrs during the day.

hth a little

Sounds good. Do you think that I should try wake to sleep, again? Or just try to tweaking the naps?

Thanks!
Grace

You can try w2s but I believe its more related to the naps. W2s is supposed to take about 3 days but 5 days to be sure. I don't think you're supposed to wake them up completely. You would stir them a little so that they enter the next phase. I am not too sure about the timing though. I have only ever once done w2s (on Jasmine just about a week ago) and I stirred her at 4:45 and she slept till 6am. But I am not sure if it was related to w2s or she just slept a little later?

Try it again if you want and if its not working then I think its time to change the naps around a bit....

Lately my DD who used to sleep until 6:00 - 6:30 wakes up about 5:30 - 5:45 as well.  What I've been doing is WI/WO.  I go in as soon as I hear her before she gets too excited about starting her day, I put her down and tuck her in, and walk out.  She cries, usually less then a minute, sometimes talks to herself a little and falls asleep for at lest few more minutes (15 - 45 depending on a day).  It doesn't always work, but the days it does, I get extra few minutes of sleep  ;D
