When do I stop feeding her at night?
« on: May 29, 2007, 15:38:07 pm »
My daughter will be 7 months old on the 4th of June, and I'm still dream feeding her.  She also seems to wake up about 2 or 3 for a feeding.  When is the right age to stop feeding them through the night, or expect them to sleep through without having to feed them?  I'm also curious as to what age people recommend that babies take only one nap a day rather than two.  My daughter takes two naps a day still, sometimes she doesn't want the second nap, and ends up having to go to bed much earlier due to it.

hi there! some say about 6months they should be able to do without a feed but I know plenty of babies who have had one night for longer than that, it really depends on the baby. The only thing to make sure of is that she's not waking out of habit rather than real hunger.
Re: the 1 nap, most transition from about 13 months onwards, some a lot later

The DF is usually stopped at around 7 months once your lo is established on 3 meals a day.

With regards to the night waking, I think this might be out of habit, and it might be time to to try and start weaning this feed.  You can always start by watering the feed down i.e  3 oz of water to 2 scoops of poweder.

Could you post your current routine so that we can have a look at it for you.

Her routine goes something like this

E- 6:30am bottle and pablum with fruit
A- 7:30am
S- 9:00am

E- 10:30am bottle
A- 11:00am play time, eats pablum at noon, followed by a bottle
S- 1:00pm till 2:30 approx.

E- 4:00pm eats pablum and veggies
A- playtime
5:15 bath time, massage and story
    5:45 bottle
    6:00 bed

That is approximately how her day goes depending on if we have to go out or not, but i try very hard to keep her to that.  I'm worried that she is waking out of habit, because my husband and I have been finding she wakes up now when we normally were dream feeding her.

Do you not offer a bottle before bed?

I do think it is out of habit, and suggest that you try to wean the middle of the night feed first before you tackle the DF.

Great!

I would try and water down the middle of the night feed first and see how you get on with it.

It could take a few days for her to adjust to it.

Did you still offer a DF?

Yes, i did give her a df.  Last night was better, she actually didn't get the df, and she only woke up at 2:30 this morning, i gave her a tiny bit of milk, and then gave her her soother and she went back to sleep.  Has anyone had to deal with a tantrum from a 6-7 month old?? She has started screaming blue murder now when she wants attention, is there anything i can do to teach her that it's wrong?

I am pleased that things were better last night - perhaps it is the DF that is causing the night wakings as it is disturbing her sleep?  Keep us posted on how you get on.

Might be worth popping over to the Growth and Development Boards and see if any of the ladies over there can give you some advice.
