advice about trasitioning please
« on: June 07, 2007, 07:55:19 am »
Hello all, I wondered if anyone has had similar problems getting their breast fed LO to take a bottle and if anyone has any success stories or advice for me ?
I have been breast feedind exclusively now for 3.5 months and as i am returning to work in 2.5 months i feel i really need to tackle the fact that my LO wont entertain a bottle. I decided a few days ago that i would follow the BW advise and spend a day getting her to take it I lasted till lunchtime !! i know some may say i should of persevered but i found it very hard it was a warm day and i was worried about her lack of fluid and i found it very distressing as she cried fom waking at 6am till i fed her at 1pm!
we have now decided to just try her everyday we seem to have found a teat she doesnt hate so are sticking to that.she will tolerate it in her mouth for a few moments and occasionally swallows if any drips in but thats it and after 2 -3 mins gets grumpy shaking her head from side to side and begins to get distressed.

My real concern is when i return to work she will be 6 months and hopefully begun weaning i am planning to continue BF first and last feeds but i understand she will need a bottle still in the day and i am terrified of the trauma of going back to work if i think she will be crying all day because she still wont take a bottle !!
Some people have said by then she may have a cup but why would a cup be any different to a bottle ?
what if she wont have that either?
Should i be trying a cup soon and forgetting the bottle altogether ?
As you can tell it is really stressing me out and the worry is starting to affect my enjoyment of our last few weeks together before i have to go to work ???
Sorry to go on . Thanks for taking the time to read this.

I am wondering if maybe the bottel is too slow for her? It sounds liek she tries fro a few minutes to eat and then either gets impatient or bored.  It could also be that she gets a lot more air from the bottle than from the breast and she not used to that.  What kind of bottle do you use??

I use a NUK bottle and teat, more for the shape than anything else as it is softer than the others i have tried, Is there a faster flow one you could recommend ?

Does anyone have any advice or thoughts on abandoning trying to get her to take a bottle and going straight to a cup ? I really dont want to keep messing her around and trying new things all the time and i dont know if it really is too soon for a cup. She will be 4 months next week.
