Why is it taking DD almost 1hr to eat during the day???
« on: June 07, 2007, 22:09:36 pm »
My DD is 3mo old and lately she is taking forever to finish her bottle.  She eats about 5oz a sitting.  It usually takes her a good 40-45 min to finish, and sometimes she drags it out for 1hr.  The funny thing is that during the night it takes her only 20-30min.  Is this normal?  Would love to speed things up during the day b/c such a long feed cuts into her activity time.  I have her on 3hr EASY and usually keep A time to 1.5hrs. I am using Dr. Brown's bottles with size 1 nipple.

Thanks in advance,
Joanna

I would try the size 2 nipple (or whatever is next up - I'm not famliar with Dr. Brown's).  Jeremy was taking 30-40 minutes a the 2 1/2 month mark and we switched nipples (use playtex) and he went to 15-20 minutes.  He never did sputter but it took him a day or two to adjust.

We use Dr. Browns bottles, and a week or two before DD was 3mo she was taking FOREVER to finish her bottles, and I went up on the nipple size - to a level 2 and it fixed it.  I just bought one pack of 3 of the size 2's and started testing those - her morning bottle is always her slowest, which never made sense because it had been since 11 the night before when she was DF and you think she'd been starving, but no.  So I used them for her morning bottle and she did great.  There was some leakage and sputtering for a day or two, but she got used to the faster flow and was MUCH more interesting in eating again.  HTH

You know, I am using the Dr. Brown's bottles with a size one nipple, and it takes my DD almost an hour to finish it as well.  She is only 6 weeks old, so this basically takes ALL of her activity time.  Literally, sometimes I get the first yawn while she is still eating.  Could it be possible that she needs a size two as well?  It seems a bit early to switch her just yet....

mjbrandon - give it a try and see how she does - an hour is an awfully long time for a feed...  let us know!

Related question...In addition to taking forever to eat most of the time, DD seems super fidgety a lot of the time.
She starts sucking and then squirms so much she knocks the bottle out of her mouth.  It makes it difficult to feed her even though she is acting super hungry.  Sometimes it seems that it's b/c she needs to burp, but not always.  Any of you experience this?  I can't figure out why she does this.

Thanks again  :)

Jeremy sometimes gets this way - starts to fuss/cry and what we usually do is just put him in his carseat and prop his bottle (as he hasn't mastered holding it yet) and just sit beside him.  My second was like this too and it usually worked.  Not sure why though!

I took your advice ladies and switched to a size 2 nipple.  DD is doing much better.  She isn't having trouble adjusting and her feeds now only take 25-35 minutes!  I am so glad b/c now she gets more playtime and I think as a result her naps have improved.
