Have I done the right thing??
« on: June 12, 2007, 07:22:49 am »
I just put my 2yo to bed (for the night after a bath) at 4.45pm

Due to a disrupted weekend, he got out of wack with sleeping... we had only just moved past a recent spell of early wakeups from a trip away & then yesterday  due to a late night the night before he woke at 5.30am (6ish is normal) he slept for 20mins about 10am in the car on the way out (hour+ long trip) & then about 1hour around 4pm (on our way home) & it took until after 9pm to get him to bed/sleep.. he woke once during the night & for the day at 5am.
Then today he napped (on our way out on the train) for 45mins in the stroller around 10.30am & then I couldn't get him back off all afternoon, by 4.30 he was falling asleep on the floor & I really didn't want a repeat of last night & I know if he wakes after 4pm, he isn't really tired enough as I can't run off enough steam (now it is winter here)

his usual bedtime is 7.30pm (mostly asleep by 8pm) (Nap approx 1-3.30pm...any earlier & he wakes at 5am... trust me I've worked with it long enough to know that works best)... he has always slept about 1/2 hour less than average (opposite to his brother) & 12.5 hours is about right for him.

I know he is really overtired from the weekend & I'm hopeful the early bed will help... just not sure he can do 13+ hours???

I do think he would do better with less day sleep & more night... BUT it is almost impossible to get him to bed before 7.30 as dh doesn't get home until 6.30 or later & both boys want/need their Daddy time... It would be fine if he slept later, but can't seem to get there, so I feel stuck between a rock & a hard place as we seem to repeat the cycle when he cant get 2+ hours day sleep, which seems to be happening more & more... needs of older brother & parents have to be considered too.

Anyway I think this turned more into a vent, but any ideas of how I can get him to sleep later in the am... it is dark until close to 7am & it isn't noises waking him.

Oh, Kate - I don't know the answer...but no doubt we are headed this way.  We have nights where Zara goes to bed at about 8:30 due to a late catnap. But she is still young, later those late catnaps will cause even more trouble than they do now.

And we also hit a very rough patch around the 5pm mark where she wants a nap ...today was one of those days. So DH has just put her in the bike trailer and gone for a ride (her first one, can't wait to hear how it goes LOL).

Zara always picks up after a bath, so often I will have her bath early to pick her up to help her make it to bedtime.

Zara is also on a fixed 6:30 wakeup.  Can't move it.  Her bedtime is the same as L's.  She also averages about 12.5 hrs per day.

I think you did the right thing for this day (unless he treats it as a nap!). If he does have a super early waking due to not lasting 13+ hours, at least you could fit two naps into his day without too late a bedtime tomorrow......

I will be watching this thread with interest. :-*

I hope it goes well, Kate. I'd be interested to know how you got on because sometimes if DS skips his nap at nursery he falls asleep in his pram on the bus at 6.30 pm. I've always woken him up as soon as we got home because I've never had the guts to transfer him from his pram to his cot (my guess is that he would be waking up an hour later ready to party)

Well he slept until 1.30am then woke for about 15mins (had a drink of water) & then went back to sleep until 5am (when he came & woke me up) & we went back to his room & he snuggled with me (never properly went back to sleep) until I told him he could go wake Daddy at 6.45am & then I snoozed for 20mins, while he & his brother played with Daddy & watched him shower... so while not ideal, I think he has caught up on a bit of sleep.
At least today with an 11am swimming lesson it is unlikely he will have an early nap... but might be able to get him to bed early as DH will be motivated for the boys to go to bed to watch a Rugby League game tonight (oh joy for me)
