23 MONTH OLD WAKING UP TOOOOO EARLY!!!
« on: June 18, 2007, 09:53:00 am »
Hello,

Our 23 month old have been waking up at 5am (and sometimes earlier) for a month now since we moved to our new house.  It is very exhausting for both my husband and I who both work full time.  She used to sleep to 7am which would give us plenty of time to get up in the morning and get ready before heading off to work.  Not sure if the early wakings has got anything to do with our move, early sun or that she also started a new nursery (where she seem to be settling in fine).  She has also started to use potty, which is something she decided on herself.  When she wakes up in the morning she will scream for milk and when we bring it to her she then cries when we won't read her a story!  Sometimes she will go back to sleep but most of the time one of us will have to get up.  If I try and leave her in her cot, she will take off her pyjama and nappy.

Currently she will have around a 1.5 - 2hr nap at nursery from 1-3pm.  I pick her up at 5pm and she has dinner at 6pm (she usually doesn't eat a lot).  Bath and milk at 7.30pm and a lot of faffing around (in and out of the cot to sit on the potty) she usually falls asleep after 8pm.

She is very independent, and I think we have hit the "wonderful" two's!

Not sure if I should put her to bed later so if anyone has got any helpful ideas, I'm willing to try anything, although as she goes to nursery all day I don't have much control of her day routine.

Ha, I could have written your post!!

I think that sunlight has a lot to do with our early wakings, also we have a wood pigeon that sits out side Alex's window and he needs shooting!!  :P

As for the stripping off at bedtime, yep she does this too!

I hope, for both our sakes, that it is a combination of early sunrise and milestones.  What I wont do is offer her milk in the morning in bed, I started that before and the mornings got earlier and earlier.  If she wakes at 5am I try to get her back to sleep but if I can't get her back then I 'slowly' start the day rather than fall into bad habits.

Oh, well, at least we're not alone.  You are right about the milk, should probably not give it to her as last night she woke up at 3ish and at 4 we gave in to milk, but then slept to 6.30am.  Although she then woke up in a horrible mood and started off by throwing a tantrum becuase she couldn't get her pyjama bottoms of and when we tried to help her it got even worse...I think we are all a bit sleep deprived including our DD.

Hi

Yes i could have written these too.   I have a 25 month ol and he has started waking early.  I'm in the process of trying to find some blackout roller blinds on the internet to help.  Last night he climbed out of his cot so i don't even have that to restrain him now as i'll have to move him to a bed.  This morning he was awake from 6am and yesterday at 5.30am.  The worse thing for me is that he has a little brother (11 weeks) and between the two of them i've kissed sleep goodbye.

I have heard that keeping them up last doesn't help, have you?  He goes to bed at 7.30pm

I have the same problem with our 2 1/2 year old daughter. I am expecting a new baby sister in 4 days and am really exhausted. i would also appreciate any tips. I have blackout blinds, have tried the later bedtime and all we end up with is a more grouchy little girl as she gets up at the same time and sometimes earlier. I have tried waking her at 4:30 or 5 am to go pee or change her pull-up and she will go back to sleep but usually only until about 6 or 6:30 (if I'm really lucky). She has no problem going to sleep on her own at night. She crawls in to her bed by herself, likes a snuggle and a lullaby and then goes to sleep. She is miserable during the day and is forever rubbing her eyes, yawning and just being miserable. She is a completely different child when she has slept.

Hi since posting my previous message i have tried the methods advised on the site - later nap time during the day and later bed time (by around 45 mins) and for the last 3 nights my boy has woken up at 7am-7.30.  Prior to this he was napping during the day between 12.30-2-2.30 and going to bed at 7pm.  No he naps between 1.30-2.30/3pm and goes to bed at 7.45-8pm.  It worked on the first night for us

Just a thought!!
