Solids not going well
« on: June 18, 2007, 12:08:31 pm »
Hi, my son Sam will be 6 months old tomorrow.  I've been weaning him for a week and a half and I don't think it's going terribly well right now.  He was eating very small quantities of baby rice, sweet potato, parsnip and butternut squash (didn't like carrots or cauliflower).  Today I gave him some baby cereal which was one of the Cow & Gate packet ones of yogurt with orange - when I tasted it it was very sweet but he liked it and I made it very runny.  Now at lunch I gave him the parsnip he'd eaten the day before but today he made a horrible face and gagged.  I'm only offering him a bit on the end of a plastic spoon.  I tried again and he was sick.  OK, dug out an ice cube of sweet potato and he ate a bit on my lap then when I put him back into his Bumbo he started to gag again so I've stopped.  This is meant to be fun for both of us!!!!

Any thoughts anyone?  My daughter always ate everything I gave her and I've never had problems like this before.

Perhaps wait a little while and then try again.
 ???
Maybe try a different time of day?
I followed Annabel KArmels weaning guide in her superfoods book and both boys seemed to follow that well.
If he's gagging, he may not yet be ready?
See what others say too
Sorry - not much help!  ::)

Both my kids were incredibly slow starters with solids. I started both of them at 6 mo. #1 seriously took 6 wks before he'd open his mouth for more than 1 bite, then he ate everything in sight. #2 has been a bit more challenging. It's been 2 mo and she is still not very enthusiastic about much of anything. It can take time...it's a completely new texture and way of eating, so it's really common for babies to be wary of it.

If you find yourself getting frustrated, there's absolutely nothing wrong with taking a short break like Sharon said and giving it a try again in a few days. Since breastmilk/formula should be his main sources of nutrition for several more months, there's no harm if he takes his time!
