How do you introduce rice cereal?
« on: June 20, 2007, 16:22:08 pm »
Hello,

I am ready to introduce rice cereal to my lo but have no idea how to do it.  She is extremely interested in what we are eating/drinking.  She is breastfed and on 4 hour EASY with 7 am wake-up.  When is the best time to give her cereal and how much do I give?  How much breastmilk do I mix it with?  Thanks for helping out this first time clueless mom!!

We have always started the rice cereal at bedtime.  LO has about half his bottle, then cereal, then bath and then finishes up his bottle.  Start off with 1 tbsp of cereal mixed with your milk (we use formula as I bottle feed or water - usually your milk though as it makes it taste a bit better).  You want quite a liquidy consistency the first time and she will probably just spit most of it out until she gets used to the spoon (it's their natural response to push things out of their mouth with their tongue).  She will also get nice and messy for you which is why we do it before bath time!  Have fun!

When you mix the rice cereal with the breastmilk do it just before you plan on feeding because the enzymes in the milk actually start to digest it in the container and it gets even runnier before your very eyes!
Don't be surprised if you only get a couple of teeny spoonfuls in.

Don't feel you have to start solids with pure rice cereal though. Some bf babies (who are used to their mik coming in a variety of flavours according to your diet) find it a bit bland. I only did rice cereal a handful of times and then made very runny fruit and veg purees (which you can always stir some rice cereal into).

As your lo seems to be an exclusively breastfed baby, have you considered adopting the baby-led weaning approach? This is a way of introducing solid foods to your lo without pureeing or mashing it - it is considered to be a natural progression for exclusively breastfed babies.

Rather than post all about it here, let me direct you to this link https://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=92560.0 which has all the relevant info - you'll also find a support thread at the top of this main forum page for parents using the approach https://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=92561.0 - so far, it's all positive!

Have fun with food!

we strarted rice cereal at 4mo because my lo had a bad cold and was having a terrible time sucking on the bottle. her 4hr easy starts at 6am so i'd give her a tbs before the 10am bottle and before the 6pm. bottle.  we avoided putting any cereal in her bottle because we had been told she would not want her bottle without cereal after.  anyways, that's how we started her off, and she really enjoys her 2tbs now, the only prob is that she doesn't want her whole bottle after.  she went from 6oz to 3.5oz.  i'm a little worried.  should i be waiting a little longer after her cereal before giving the bottle? i've been giving it immediately after her cereal.  i've noticed others are waiting an hour, but their lo's are older.
