Hi,

My dd has been exclusively breastfed and today we gave her her first bottle of formula (Nan 2) and she drank 210mls of it without a fuss. However 5 hours later she started getting some rashes on her arms and various parts of her body was reddish.

I haven't her any more formula.

Is it formula intolerance? Allergy to cow-protein? Lactose intolerance?

Will the rash and redness disappear on its own? Do I change formula?

Thanks,

Catharine
Cheers,

Catharine

Has your lo had any other form of dairy?  Yogurt or something?  If she has and didn't break out then I would rule out a milk allergy - if not then you might want to try that to see?  A friend of mine, her son is allergic to dairy and he broke out in a rash but mostly on his face around his mouth...  not sure what else to tell you though - sorry I can't be of more help!

If you have been breastfeeding and including dairy in your diet and there hasn't been a reaction I wouldn't think that is would be that.  I have never heard of lactose intolerance causing a rash.  A rash caused by an allergy can develop anywhere on their body.  I would probably call the dr and see what he/she said.  You might want to try another formula to see how she does.  I know a lo that can tolerate soy formula but not soy milk so you never know.  Hope you get some answers.

She has not eaten any other form of diary.

Her skin cleared up today so I've given her another bottle and will watch to see if her skin reacts again.
Cheers,

Catharine

Catharine

My DS had an allergy to formula and he got a rash on his face, very red and raised....he also got very black/green smelly poo..upset tummy....sleep problems....small possetting and making strange grunting noises.

I decided to add the bottle feeds as I was losing so much weight from BF and was very tired.I was so looking forward to the freedom of having 2 day time bottle feeds but in the end it was just easier to continue with BF. Goats formula and lactose free formula did not work for us either and he also has a soy allery.

Also 10 days after he started on the Farex baby cereal he got the rashes again...not sure what was in that that casued the problems but as soon as I stopped the cereal he was fine again.

Not sure that this helps as I have no solution for you, as I said I am still BF.

Sounds like it could be a dairy allergy. I would be really careful as reactions can be more severe the second or third time they are given.

Totally agree with PP. Some LOs can tolerate dairy in breastmilk but not directly in formula or from milk. Did you discuss with your doctor?

It may be a milk protien allergy even if your LO has had other dairy products.  The same thing happened to my son.  Everytime we gave him milk, milk based formula, goat's milk or ice cream he would get a pin prick, red bumpy rash on his face a chest.  The other dairy products such as yogurt and cheese didn't bother him.  We had to switch to lactose free formula.  Even though his allergy was to the protien the lactose free formula (Lactose Free Enfalac) must have altered the protein becasue the rash stopped.  Good luck!!!  I hope this helps.
