Egg Allergy Question
« on: June 24, 2007, 01:14:18 am »
Hi all,
My DH was allergic to eggs as an infant. (Or so his mother thinks).  I am thinking of trying eggs with DS this week to see if it will be ok to give him his Bday cake next week. :)  I have bought some Benadryl just in case.  Any thoughts/words of wisdom? (Do it, don't do it?)  How long does it take for the reaction to occur? How much egg would you give him?
THANKS

I am no expert, but something I have learned is that some lo can tolerate or not really show reactions when eggs are cooked in something like a cake.  My Dr. said a scrambled egg may have a different effect depending on the severity of the allergy.

If you have any desire to wait a bit longer, consider baking some egg free cupcakes and serving that to your lo for the bday.  That is what we did.  EVERY Dr. will give you different advice.

We have family members who have food allergies and this is something I have learned.  Hopefully all the real experts will be able to respond further.

Enjoy the bday!!

Sounds like us.  I had an egg allergy as a babe and grew out of it.  (digest them rather slowly now.)  Doc said wait until 1yo to give Mouse eggs.  Something to think about: some vaccines have egg in them.  Like the flu shot.  I was told that if she was ok with her shots, she would be ok with eggs.

Hello,
My LO had reaction to egg when she was about 8m.  I went to see specialist and apparently they can grow out of it. She now 16m and still has same problem.  However she is fine with food that contains egg e.g cake.  So your LO may be fine with cake but not with egg on its own.  Also consultant told me the egg white is what causes the reaction/allergy, so maybe cake without egg white?? (If you worried)

i agree with all pp's - better to give him something that includes an egg, rather than just the straight egg.

luke had an egg allergy, and at 2.5yr he seems to be outgrowing it; slowly giving him foods with eggs in it to see if there are any reactions.

(i also have a great cake recipe if you do end up with an egg allergy)

If I may interject here. How do egg allergies manifest?  I am unsure if DD is allergic... though on the occasions I have given her eggs she seems to have a very slight reaction..i.e. a rash (but it is very hard to tell if it is a reaction to eggs as the rash isn't quite localised to one area nor does it seem to be much at all...so really I want to be sure ... maybe I can be overreacting?)
TIA!

Hi all,
Well, I just went for the gusto and gave DS a few bites of scrambled eggs for b'fast. No problems. ;D Upon further questioning of my DH, he was never formally "diagnosed". He has some reactions to shots and they thought it was due to egg allergy.

Ana_Cristina, I got hives and bronchospasm.  Basically that's an asthma attack.  No fun!
