6 month early wake & night wake- sched change needed
« on: July 03, 2007, 00:54:36 am »
6 month DS was sleeping well until a few weeks ago- CRASH it changed. He will not go through the night. the last few nights I have done pu/pd around 3 am or 4 am for 1- 11/2 hours. I feed him at 10 or 11. Here is the EASY:

6- awake usually with a VERY messy diaper
6:30 or 7 BF- I try to stave him off
7:30 cereal and fruit
8 or 8:30 nap for 1 1/2 to 2 hours ( but after 2.5 hours I woke him on SUnday)
10 BF
11- lunch veggies
12 or 12:30 nap 1 to 1.5 hours
2 BF
4 nap
6 solids
bath stuff BF and bed 8 at the latest asleep

Sometimes he has BF at 6 then solids- I am experimenting. He also urinates so much at noght he wakes up very wet and unhappy. I was giving a bottle at dinner time, then tried bottel at 10pm or 11pm.
The problem I see is the last nap is long, not a catnap. That extra sleep accounts for the early wake up I tihnk.
SO, how should I change this? I would like him to sleep later that 5:45 or 6 am!
He is a reflux baby on medication so it is controlled. He is in the 6 month growth spurt range and he rolls now- we had a week of 2 AM wake to play with is body. One thing after another- I think the teeth are moving too!
Should I just keep saying  THIS TOO SHALL PASS?!

If you think the diaper is waking him up there are diaper doublers http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/search-handle-url/index=blended&field-keywords=diaper%20doubler&results-process=default&dispatch=search/ref=pd_sl_aw_tops-1_blended_26158947_1&results-process=default

The diaper doublers give more absorbancy to the diapers and may help to keep him from feeling wet.

At 6 months they usually do 2 2hr naps and a 45 min cat nap. It looks like you are doing 2 2hr naps and a 1-1.5 hour nap. You might want to keep that to only 1 hour and see if that helps. Too much day time sleep can make them wake early, as well as not having enough.

Teething is a definite possibility. Kids can teeth for a few days, stop, then teeth again, stop etc and not have anything break through for a while.

I feel like I rambled, did any of that help?

It did help- you verified my suspicions!I agree that the last long nap has to be a 45 min,  today he did 45 at noon and I expect him to do 2 ours from 3-5. Either way, he will do 2 naps of 2 hours and 1 45 min. I was not sure if I should try to get him to sleep longer or wake him from the last long nap and have a cranky baby!

When I look at him gums, I see the teeth above the gum line- like they are pushing forward instead of comming down. Last night he did not wake but slept 8-10 and after BF 11-5:45. None of the 3-4:30 activity- YAY!
I put a super absorbent diaper on him the other night and he peed right throug it! I will check the doubler you suggest.
THANK YOU!

You are so welcome. Any time.

I look at total day time sleep and not so much at the sequence of naps. So if he did 2 2hr naps today and 1 45 min nap that sounds good, regardless of the sequence in which they occured. Does that make sense?

Mobility always messes with sleep for a week or two. Kids tend to practice their new skill until they get board of it and then go back to sleeping normally.

You are doing great! Keep up the good work!
