16 weeks old cranky pants
« on: July 03, 2007, 08:49:01 am »
DS just suddenly turned into cranky pants since last week. Not sure what happened.. He has been on 4 hour routine for a while now, but now his activity time is getting shorter, his long naps get shorter too and he can't seem to self soothe anymore, and he throws tantrums during his waking hours.

Here was his routine:
7.30am wake up, BF
9.15am nap (he usually slept for 2 hours and bit)
11.30am bf
1.15ish pm nap (an hour and half)
3.30pm eat
5.15pm catnap
6.00pm wake up
6.30pm bf, bath
7.30pm bed

now to make things a bit trickier, we did a little experiment of eliminating dreamfeed for about 2 weeks, which wasn't really a success so we reintroduced df 2 nights ago and he goes back to sleeping through from the df around 10.15ish to 7.30pm. could it be he still readjusting the df that's why he's unsettled all day now?

Also as I mentioned his A time gets shorter now, he gets cranky just after an hour or 1 1/4 hr although i just thought about it, could he just be bored? (but he shows sign of tiredness and changing activity doesnt really help). he's also used to be a great napper but now wakes up crying after 45 mins and sometimes couldnt self soothe. if i manage to put him down again, he'll sleep for another 45 mins maybe and wakes up cheerfully - for awhile and then get cranky again.

he used to be sooo easy... he  sleeps independently and generally a contended boy. Wonder where I went wrong? Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Around 4 months they start some developmental changes that can affect their sleep and behavior. Also, if he is having a growth spurt (which is normal around his age) he will need more sleep. He may also be an early teether. Have you seen any extra drooling or need to chew? If you just put the DF back into the routine wait a good week to two weeks to see how he does. Give any routine changes at least that long.

i do suspect early teething as he does gnaw on my finger when i offer it to him and also  he's bit of drooler now but not so sure - checked his gum this morning and I couldn't tell the difference :P. He woke up during dreamfeed last night and cried his lungs out when we put him back to his cot, which is unusual but hopefully he was just having a bad day  :(. I managed to get him awake close to 2 hours this morning. He just went down - hopefully everything will go back on track. Actually.. no it won't! my sister in law and her kids are coming over today and staying with us for a week. Rrrrrrr....

Ahh, I totally understand. The morning A time is usually the shortest of the day, and the first nap of the day is an extension of night time sleep so it tends to be the best. Hopefully he is having a bad day. If you suspect he is having pain (from either teething or gas) talk to your doctor. He could recommend some tylenol dosing or mylecon drops. Does he often cry after eating?

He just woke up after 45 mins morning nap (which normally lasted more than 2 hours) and was so cranky but can't put him down again. i don't know what other reasons that might cause this change. He cried (more like a whinge) a bit after eating few days ago and I thought my milk was drying out but the nurse at the health centre said he probably had enough and if he settled after a few minutes I shouldn't worry about it.
He;s more of a whinger than in pain I think - sort of fussiness that lasts for days. I am not totally convinced that he's teething since he still sort of sleeps well at night.

Have you been eating anything that could be causing him gas? Veggies (tomatoes, broccoli, cauliflower) or anything greasy or spicy?

Hi, sorry for replying so late. Been busy with my sister in law  :P. I don't think he has any gas or pain in his tummy. His second nap yesterday lasted for 2 hour, and today he is following the same pattern (short morning nap, and long afternoon nap). I am just not sure if it is because he is very very tired on the second nap and therefore sleeps longer, or could it be possible that he has developed new pattern - the reason I am thinking like this is because he sleeps very well at night and wakes up quite happy as well, so maybe he isn't very tired in the morning and only need a catnap to boost up his energy? I am not even so sure anymore if he was cranky after his morning naps because he was still tired or because he was tired of crying resisting me putting him down again. Hope this makes sense - really appreciat your opinion! Thx

Hey, if he is sleeping well at night and happy, then no worries!
