Transition to Cot
« on: July 08, 2007, 07:49:28 am »
Hi everyone. My son is eight weeks and has always slept in a bassinet beside our bed. He's getting a bit big for it, so in the next few weeks we plan to move him into a cot in his room. I'm just wondering if anyone has any ideas for making the transition as smooth as possible. Noah currently falls asleep in the bassinet with the help of some shush/pat. He's familiar with his room as it's where we change him, but he doesn't sleep there. Should we make the move from the bassinet cold turkey? Or would it be best to start with a few naps in the cot? Thanks for any suggestions!

A few naps in the cot would do no harm,so I would give that a go.
My 2 girls never had any problems when they went from moses basket to cot.
Good luck. :)

we had dd in a moses basket next to our bed at first but it was a disaster as no one got any sleep so we had to transition her pretty fast to her own room. We did this by keeping her in the moses but actually putting that in her cot, that way she got use to the surroundings. Then at 6 weeks she outgrew it so as you suggested I started first doing naps in the cot, and still in the moses at night, then after a few days went for it and she was just fine. Keeping bedtime and naptime routines the same will help as he will still know it's time to sleep.

Hi

Katie was in her moses basket (similar to bassinet) until about 4mo as she's quite small...  we did it the other way around and transitioned for nights before we transitioned for naps, as Katie generally sleeps well at night but not so good for naps.

We also did the following:

- put the moses basket inside the cot for a few weeks (need only have been a few days I suspect) to get her used to sleeping in that room  / in that part of the room
- put white sheets (pinned securely) over the side of the cot so that it looked more like the inside of a moses basket (one time I tried without and she spent the whole naptime looking at the exciting world outside the cot bars!)
- put rolled up blankets around her, including accross her head, so it would feel as secure as the moses basket. In fact we have not been able to remove the one accross the top of her head as she gets herself to sleep by cuddling up to it (!) - I think it reminds her of being in the moses basket.

No idea which if any of these things helped, but Katie managed the transition fine - and is now v happy in the cot.

These are great suggestions. Thankyou! I will definitely try putting the bassinet in the cot for the first few days and see how that goes.

Hi guys, I would like to have my little bub in his own room in his cot and I don't think he would be bothered at all, although I think I will be the bothered one:-\ as I am afraid I wont wake up when he needs a feed as he is such a quiet and perfect little boy and hardly cries at all and when he does he is ever so quiet. The other thing that worries me as silly as it may sound:-[ I still check him often to hear him breathing. I guess it is something I am just going to have to get over. He is my second baby and my first was a nightmare baby with reflux and colic 13 years ago...big break...
