overstimulated, overtired.......??????
« on: July 09, 2007, 03:53:38 am »
I have a 6 week old and I am having a heck of a time getting him settled to sleep. It takes way too long to help this little guy to sleep. I try to help him to sleep when he shows the first signs of being tired but by the time we actually get to sleep it is an hour later sometimes and he is now overtired and overstimulated and we all know how it goes from there. I have tried rocking, walking, pat/shh and covering his face until he nods off and he just fights me in every way. He just can't shut off on his own. We do use a paci and if he looses that I have to plug him back in (i'm weaning at three months). He will start to nod off and I can see him go through the start of the sleep cycles but when he jolts or the eyes roll he awakes and it starts all over. He hates the swaddle too, which really disappoints me because my daughter loved it and she went right to sleep after I swaddled her. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks

Katie

Hi Katie.  I'm not sure I have any really brilliant advice for you but a couple of things.  I would persist with the swaddling (maybe try a miracle blanket - available from mothercare or their own website - almost impossible to wriggle out of.)  I thought I wouldn't be able to keep my dd swaddled as she would continually escape but she is much better now.  Swaddling to her now signals sleeping.  I just have to go slowly when I put her in, so she doesn't get upset by it.  Come up with a wind down routine that suits you both. Do it every time you put him down for sleep.  Give yourself lots of time to wind down.  You may need to start winding down right after the feed, especially once you start getting over tired.  I did/do sh/pt with my dd.  We started at 4 weeks.  She was 8 weeks yesterday and celebrated by falling asleep in her moses basket all by herself, for all three naps, and bedtime, for the first time.  It was hard work getting there though.  We spent HOURS doing sh/pat.  I really thought it would never work but it did.  I think also 6 weeks is young, it really is.  Sometimes I think we may expect too much???  Anyway.  Hope you find something useful here.

Also, have you checked out the FAQs at the beginning of the general sleep issues and especially the naps forum?  There is a really good one in naps on teaching infants to sleep.  Also I have found it useful to go through the previous posts (I just pick a page at random!) It's amazing how many times the same problems come up.  I'm new to this too!

Thanks for the advice. I tried swaddling again today and he seems to tolerate it. He just lays there and sucks his paci. But it is a big step he didn't fight me. I will try the miracle blanket. I will try to stick to a wind down routine and see if that helps. Thanks again for the advice.
