Nothing calms him when OT at bedtime!
« on: July 15, 2007, 00:15:26 am »
I'm at a loss here and don't know what to do!!!! :( My 4.5 month old DS has had 3 weeks of eratic night wakings, several times a night, and sometimes takes up to 2 hours to go back to sleep. I know he must be OT'd (I sure am!) and I've worked really hard to get good naps in during the day. The past 4 days he's finally started doing 1.5-2 hour a.m. naps by himself (no more w2s or extending), but I still need to extend his pm nap (with not much difficulty). He gets his catnap 90% of the time; the odd time he cries the whole time so I put him to sleep earlier.

Here's the problem: last night he must've been OT (was up 2hours 20 min after his catnap) cause when I put him down to bed he cried hysterically for 45 min straight! He had been teething a week ago, but I don't think this was the case. I tried my usual ways to calm him (shh, hand on his shoulder/leg, hand over his eyes) but he wouldn't quiet down. I resorted to picking him up and trying to rock him, but that wouldn't work either. I just stayed by his side and eventually he passed out due to exhaustion doing the whole snort, sigh thing   (so painful   :'() Of course he woke up 30 mins later screaming, and when I went he had vomited all over! He went right back to sleep after I cleaned him up, and didn't wake again until 1:30 (I fed him), then he woke at 3, 4 ,5 and finally 6am when we both got up.

Today he had a nice hour 50 min am nap, and a 2 hour pm nap. Then my MIL was over to watch him for a couple hours while I had to go out, and he had been up about 3 hours before I got home and quickly put him down. Of course he was all giggles and smiles for her, and actually went down for his catnap really well. But then when I went to put him down for bedtime, he began crying after 20 mins of mantra cry, and I've tried for 1 hour to get him to sleep. He doesn't take a paci anymore, but I eventually let him suck my finger which seems to have done the trick. (until he wakes again in 30-45 mins!) What should I do in this case? Not much seems to soothe him lately (he's touchy/spirited)and I always let him try to settle himself before I go in, but when he's overtired he starts to really cry fairly soon.

I think he must be severly OT from weeks of nightwakings and wondering how I should tweak our routine to help him rest up (and me too!)
Here is our routine today: (most days are generally the same A time etc., only our first wakeup time changes due to his eratic night wakings)

E 6:00 (7oz FF)
S 8:00-9:50
E 10:00 (7oz)
S 11:40-1:40 (had to extend after 50 min)
E 2:00 (7oz)
awake with MIL till I got home
S 4:45-5:30
E 6:00 (7oz)
bath, bedtime routine
S 6:40 (didn't actually sleep till 7:45)

I've posted in nightwakings a while ago, and we all thought it was due to his teething and milestone (just learnt to roll over, though he's swaddled and doesn't roll at night). He often wakes every hour (say at 3, then 4, then 5) and normally feeds once in the night (around 2 or 3 am depending on when he last ate-we don't do DF as it didn't work for him before, so last feed is usually 7ish).

Any thoughts/ideas greatly appreciated by one tired mommy!!!  :(

Thanks, Jessica

Hello,

I feel your pain... I have been there.  I noticed that your LO's day starts at six.  I found that when I taught my LO to sleep till seven, but kept the rest of the day more or less the same, he was way less OT.  After about 5 days of making him stay in bed until seven things really started to look up for me.  My LO never did DF either, so I know how exhausting it is when you are fighting night wakes.  I don't remember what Tracy said about early morning feeds (1-2 am) at 4 months, but I am guessing that b/c your LO isn't getting that DF, he needs those calories.  Is there anyway you can boost his calories during the day???  It appears that your LO is bottle fed, maybe adding an extra oz at every E??

Hi Mum 2 Boo Bear,

I've also thought of trying to get more calories in during the day, but I'm sure you know at this age they're easily distracted and sometimes food isn't his top priority! I've tried EAEASY to get more into him; actually this morning he took in 8 oz! Our days don't normally start at 6am (just yesterday), usually 7:30 or 8 depending on when I can get him back to sleep in the night (some nights he'd be up from 4-6 am, then back to sleep till 8!)

Good news though, last night after fussing/crying for an hour at bedtime, he slept until 2am (I waited till he started to really need me, and he drained 6 oz!). Then he fussed/mantra cried from 5:15-5:45 and went back to sleep till 6:40 when we got up. He was basically out of his swaddle at this time, and probably was earlier; would love to wean him from that but whenever I try he won't fall asleep (tried 1 arm out, 2 arms out, aussie swaddle, and no swaddle). He does suck his thumb but for whatever reason won't at night, and won't take a paci anymore  ???

Also wondering if some babies just have a really loud mantra cry? My DS is loud to begin with; has always cried loud and squeals/screeches like a parrot when happy! Last night when he woke around 5 his mantra cry got to the point where he'd shout/cry out and it would escalate, but I waited and then he quieted down. Does anyone else's LO do this? I wonder if I've been rushing in before, but I don't want him to be crying alone either  :(

Either way, we're going to get more food in him today, get good naps and hopefully have a good sleep! (and even 1 night waking for a feed is a godsend to me compared to nights we've been having!) Maybe when he's on solids he'll sleep better  :D

What are we doing wrong??? Today my LO had a perfect napping day and was such as angel! But come bedtime and again he refuses! Both my DH and I tried tonight for 1 hour 45 mins before he fell asleep; his eyes were wide open and when we'd try to leave the room after he quieted down, he'd start right back up again. Is he already having separation anxiety, or is he dependant on me to fall asleep at bedtime (falls asleep no prob for naps, unless of course OT, but I think I have his A times well sorted out now).

Here's what today looked like:

woke 6:45 am (play in crib for 15 mins)
E 7:00 am (8 oz)
S 8:25-1010
E 10:30 (8oz)
S 12:00-2:15 (slightly longer than usual but normally I have to extend this nap and today he slept thru himself, so I woke him)
E 2:30 (8oz)
S 4:00-5:00 catnap (is this too long; I let him wake himself)
E 6:00 (6oz)
bath
E 6:30 (3oz topup)
S 6:45 (took till 8:30 to sleep)

Does anyone have any ideas? I'm really confused now cause he used to fall asleep no problem!!!! Please help!

Hi, Isn't there anyone else out there with any input??? My Lo is still napping well and continues to refuse bedtime (no prob at naptime); now he's waking around 6:00 where 7:30 used to be the norm. How can we get back to a later wakeup time? Of course we're still have night wakings as well (he seems to need me to shhh him back to sleep, even after a feed). Can someone please respond, or should I be posting this elsewear? :'(

Hi,

I am sorry that no one has chipped in to help you.... My family was away camping for the last 2 weeks.

Has it gotten any better in the last little while???

I hope you don't feel to alone in the struggle to get sleep.  I certainly know what it feels like to think you are the only person on the earth that can't get a good nights sleep.

I hope things are better,

R

Hi, and thanks for the interest and support in us!  ;D I ended up posting over in Nightwakings, and Isabella and Jasmine's mum helped us out a lot. Some days (or should I say nights!) are good and others not so good, but it's generally getting better with less NW's and no more OT at bedtime (but it means he goes down at 6:00 pm). Now I just make sure I try to go to bed earlier too!!! We're thinking of taking a long weekend and going camping too; maybe we're being optimistic thinking it'll be "long", but we all really need to get away, and even 1 night away will be fun!

Thanks again,

Jessica  :)
