Trying to DF...won't latch unless awake?
« on: July 23, 2007, 03:09:11 am »
DS was sleeping 6-7 hours (from 9/10-4ish) and it was suggested that I try a dreamfeed so he could make it until morning.  The first time he wouldn't take it at all.  I got it in his mouth and he just shook his head, never swallowed or latched on.  I was ready to try it tonight and he woke before I got a chance to.  This is his third night of waking in under 3 hrs.  :'(  I gave him formula (he is BF and this is only his third ever bottle) with a different nipple (NUK) and he took a few oz and then wouldn't suck anymore b/c he was fast asleep.

What do I do?  Forget the DF?  Do babies really take a feed while they're totally asleep?

Hiya Kim,

I only used the dream feed a few times so I'm no expert but this is what I remember ...

Ciara wouldn't latch on if she was fast asleep. I had to listen (at the door  ::)) for her starting to fuss/move around indicating that she was nearing the end of a sleep cycle.  I would then go in and offer the dream feed and she would take it.  However, if I went in too early she wouldn't latch on at all and I'd have to try again.

The dreamfeed didn't work for us so we only used it a short while, so that's about it for my advice I'm afraid.

HTH a bit and good luck :-*

Kim,

I was so frustrated by the DF I quit it once as I was happy enough getting up at 4am.  I then went back to it after he started waking 2x as this was not normal for him as he was a great sleeper early on.  So I tried again and tried to stay awake myself  ::) and it worked!  It took almost a week with at first not taking much, but then got into it.  I did a bottle of EBM, just a couple oz as I found he would open his mouth for that and not my breast all sleepy.  Then when the bottle was coming to an end I would slip my breast in there!  After a while I didn't need to do the bottle and just went straight to breast.  Sometimes I put my finger in his mouth too and then switched to breast.  I only really did the DF for around 6-7 weeks or so though and then it was time to wean it at 7 months when his solids were picking up....as usual, you just get going and things change. S*I*G*H.

HTH,

Aisling x
