8 week old not sleeping easily during the day
« on: July 26, 2007, 22:01:41 pm »
HI
my second child , tyler is 8 weeks old and i am having a hard time getting him to sleep during the day. First problem is i have a 21 month old daughter who is amazing but is around. so i cannot spend tons of time getting him to fall asleep (rock him etc..)she was an easy napper during the day so i never had to spend time GETTING her to fall asleep. she would sleep anywhere and for hours. Tyler sleeps well at night usually 8-9 hours actually for the past week. For the afternoon when my daughter naps, i am able to do a whole routine , swaddle, rock etc....and he usually goes down for 2-3 hours (off me, in a crib or bassinette) so he gets one good nap a day. He will not sleep in a car seat or stroller but will sleep on me in the baby bjorn etc...I typically am out for 2 hours int he morning to do something for my older child. and if i have him in thebaby bjorn he will sleep the whole time.
Another question i have is he seems to have some GI issues after he feeds at 4/5 am and does not sleep soundly.he grunts and groans and moves all over the place..keeps me awake but he is usually sleeping through it. I swear he knows if i am int he room or not (even if totally quiet) i usually have to pick him up at least once after i put him down bc he cries . after once he goes back to bed.
I am going to read the baby whisperer book this weekend (a friend will letme borrow it) so hopefully this will help.
any advice is welcome!
NIcole

read the book make a routine and piost it in the EASY forum and they will give you feed back.  I would also recomend going to the FAQ of the sleep section there is so much invaluble info there.  Welcome to the boards and to the wornderful world of baby whispering!

Hi Nicole,
I have no good advice for you, but I'm in the same boat...My DD2 is 9 weeks old and although she sleeps well at night, she has a tough time napping during the day.  We also have a 3 y.o. DD, so like you said, it's hard to get the time to do the "routine".  I absolutely loved the Baby Whisperer book and think that you'll find a LOT of useful info in there.  I'm also reading Baby Wise, which is similar and liking it as well.  First thing would be to get a good schedule going so everyone, including baby, know what to expect.  Then, a lot of things fall into place by themselves.  As for how to get them to nap better - I'm up for suggestions, too!!  I think our problem may be that she is getting overstimulated/overtired...So we're going to try to watch her sleepy cues better and possibly put her down for naps sooner.  We'll see.  Good luck with it - you (and Tyler) will do great!

Mary

It is normal for babies to have one sleep time better then the other as well, so it is normal to have a baby sleep well at night but have horrible day sleep or opposite.  mine always slept like a rock at night but naps were and still are hit and miss.

I guess I'd rather have her sleep well at night and just deal with the daytime stuff...Especially since I'm back at work now and my DH and MIL are doing baby duty!!   ;)
